CAW demands new ‘bold vision’ for Canada’s auto industry
http://business.financialpost.com/2012/04/16/caw-demands-new-bold-vision-for-canadas-auto-industry/
The Canadian Auto Workers Union called Monday for a national automotive industry policy that would create a Canadian-owned vehicle manufacturer, lower the value of the loonie, end free-trade talks with Japan, South Korea and the European Union, and impose tariffs on companies that don’t build vehicles in Canada.

Calling it a “bold vision,” the CAW wants government to: negotiate a Canadian manufacturing footprint, intervene to reduce the value of the Canadian dollar, secure Canadian manufacturing commitments from automakers, hold public minority shares in car companies, investigate the possibility of building a Canadian car manufacturer, build a green auto industry and implement a buy-Canadian vehicle procurement strategy.
Unbelievable. Every single thing they want to do comes at the expense of every Canadian who doesn't work in the auto sector. The government should not pick winners and losers.
These special-interest groups (CAW) have to go. The only way to get rid of them is to reduce government's role in the economy. If they can't hand out these favours to big business and unions, there will be no point to all the lobbying.

Instead of generalizing things and making off the cuff statements why don't you try to back them up with an analysis of a point?
do you have a point other than unions are bad?
Please explain a detail(s) that screw everyone else instead of just pointing to the article and effectively saying "see, see what they are trying to do?".
What are they trying to do and how are they doing it?LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked stuntman for this post.

It's obvious how all of these hurt Canadians. I didn't know it had to be spelled out how state investments in auto manufacturers, artificially depressing the value of the loonie, tariffs, and ending free trade negotiations hurt Canadians.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked DearSummer for this post.

No. It is not obvious. If you think that it is obvious then post it. Make an intelligent point. If all this is another rant "see what those guys are doing!??" then there is nothing to see here. Nothing to discuss. Let A-tree bring up his own thread and discuss his point he doesn't need you starting one for him. You don't want to come across as a troll do you?
So one more time with feeling :) :
By referencing the article what are they trying to do and how are they doing it? I would like to read an intelligent and direct point you have to make.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked stuntman for this post.

Do they seriously expect there to be no backlash from this? Every country mentioned would hit us right back economically if this went through. The idea of a state-owned auto manufacturer competing successfully against the entire current industry as well as the coming players from India and China is also ridiculous.

Investing tax dollars into an auto company
-Costs tax dollars to benefit a special-interest group
-Favours a specific industry
-Government can't run private companies efficiently and is not a good investor
Artificially lower value of dollar
-Reduced purchasing power for Canadians
-Business productivity improvement will slow down as foreign capital goods will be more expensive
-Export businesses are artificially-supported and can not compete efficiently with market exchange rates. Eventually the party will end and Canadian exports will not be competitive.
More tariffs/End free trade
-Reduced purchasing power for Canadians
-Less access to quality and good-value products
-Export businesses will be hurt with inability to export goodsLOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked DearSummer for this post.

Well, when you export 1 vehicle for every 4000 vehicles imported from korea...
Of course you want more equal trading...

Who cares, how is this worth talking about? This is just the union execs trying to justify their salaries. They're beating their chest and trying to improve things for their members, exactly what they're supposed to do. None of these things are going to happen and the union knows that. CAW union execs are basically politicians and they're trying to make themselves look good to their members, nothing more.
It's not like every thing the CAW asks for the government has to give it to them._______________

Why should everyone in Canada suffer lower purchasing power and higher prices (no free trade, tariffs, costlier imports) just to support the auto industry?

They always seem to shrug personal responsibility for something, like when their US counterparts took a stake in the automakers & lower wages while they opted higher wages and no stakes..
