I dont see how this would help much. It's mainly your arm and body that causes the shake in the first place.

Only works when you're not using heavy lenses and cameras. Try using this on a 300mm f/2.8 lens mounted on EOS 1 series body after lugging it around for an hour.

With the winter weather we been having here, that washer and string will get dirty with the snow/salt/dirt when it hits the ground and my boots.

True, but the same trick works if you anchor the string to anything solid, like a tree, post, ceiling light, etc. Just make the string 2x as long and wrap the string around the item once and hold the end.
