Inventories of the Volt will become even more limited (and so will discounting off of MSRP) over the next several months. Due to high inventories in the US, GM started winding down production of the Volt on October 20th at the Detroit plant which produces them. They are shutting down production altogether on November 13th until after Christmas.

Realistically, the Volt should be the #1 car in Ontario in the compact segment. I personally think the Leaf is easily a better value, but the Volt is basically for people who can't fully let go of gas. Toyota should sell basically 0 units of the Prius with the Volt available.

Thanks OP and everyone here for the discussion here on pricing and features of the Volt. I spent some time here before I made my purchase.

I'm not sure how well the deal I got compares to what the rest of you are getting but it was the best one I could find after shopping many dealers with many of them offering no discounts due to the high demand.

I placed my order for a 2018 Volt last week at a dealer in the York Region area and I was able to negotiate a deal where the dealer matched me halfway between invoice price and MSRP.
They applied it to the price of the car and all the options available to it and also took the $14k govt incentive as down. I found their offer to be pretty hot.

Here's my build:
  • 2018 Volt LT
  • 24,000 Km/year (36 months lease)
  • Silver metallic paint
  • Leather comfort package
  • Bose Premium speakers
  • Driver confidence package (blind spot, rear cross traffic, parking sensors)
Total payment with taxes included is $509/month
I suspect this will be even less if you just wanted a base Volt with 20,000 km/year

What do you guys think of the deal?
Seems good deal..
which dealer did u go to??
Also do u know price for 20k per year..??
How much is residual value at the end of lease??

Is there anything stopping people from going to the US to buy the Volt?
Would a US car warranty be valid in Canada?
Is the cost a factor due to exchange rates?

It's not really worth it anymore with the exchange rate. You may be able to save a few bucks but the time and hassle required is extensive.

GM should scrap the Volt since Bolt is cannibalizing its sales. They should then put the Volt internals into an SUV and it'll sell very well.

The discount applies to 2018s or just remaining in stock 2017s?

They'll probably kill it off before that. The Volt is losing popularity because of BEV's. If you want midsize you basically have to get a Leaf right now.

The bigger EV's on the market are:
Nissan Leaf - 250km
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (poor electric only range - 30km)
Volvo XC90 (poor electric only range - 30km)
BMW Xe (poor electric only range - 20km)
Tesla Model S - 450km
Tesla Model X - 400km
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid (medium electric only range - 60km)

I've heard the rumours as well.......the Volt will be redesigned as a crossover. Question is, will anyone in Ontario buy it if the $14k goes away? It's an EXTREMELY competitive vehicle right now for people looking for a vehicle that can still run on gas, but I'm thinking it probably won't sell very well unless there is a federal incentive program introduced.
