What exactly are the powers of an Off-Duty cop ? Do they have exactly the same powers & authority as when they are on duty ? What's the law on that ?

Some say they have the exact same powers, some say NO they are just like regular citizens when off duty and some say its limited powers - more than a regular citizen, but less than an on-duty cop.
Which is true ? Do they get to take the badge home ? I believe they have to leave their gun at the station after the shift is done, but what about the uniform & badge, do they take it home with them ?

Dafonte Miller, a 19-year-old who is black, will lose an eye after an alleged altercation with a Toronto cop, Const Michael Theriault, last Dec. 28, 2016. He was off-duty, but, according to Miller’s lawyer, identified himself as a cop.

Miller was punched, kicked and beaten with a metal pipe.

About time. The only reason his thug sons were beating an innocent black teenager with a steel pipe is because they thought Daddy will cover up for them. Now the kid is going to lose an eye.

Detective father of Toronto officer charged in Dafonte Miller beating under investigation

Det. John Theriault, who served in the force's professional standards unit, now subject of OIPRD probe

Is the uniformed thug still on suspended pay on tax payer's money?

How many jobs can you beat up people with a steel pipe till they lose their eye and then sit home and collect your full paycheque from tax payers?

From Article on First page.
Miller, who is black, and his buddies were walking to a friend’s house when, according to Falconer, two men emerged from the open garage of a home. They asked if they were from the area and what they were up to.

Miller, who lives about a five-minute drive away, and his friends said they didn’t need to answer and kept walking. One of the two men identified himself as a police officer and a chase ensued, Falconer said.
Two men — an off-duty Toronto police constable and his brother — now face criminal charges in a case that has prompted accusations of racial profiling and police deception.

What would be an acceptable reason for two people to chase and beat someone with a steel pipe?
Could HAVE, not could OF. What does 'could of' even mean?

As some would say, the thug did something wrong so a good beating is in order. Unfortunate for the kid who lost an eye just mindiing his own business.

if he molested my little sister is one example?

look i feel bad for the kid, but common sense would tell anyone.. no one just starts chasing a random person and beats them up. unless your high on crack or k2 or something.. kid had to been doing something that triggered this (and still, i say again, it was wrong for them to have beaten him like that)

A lot of people just chase random people and beat them up. They're called criminals. Two white guys harassing and beating a black kid for walking past their house is a pretty clear-cut case of criminal behavior.

Are you really that naïve and stupid? Cops have been beating people up and getting away with it since there have been cops in existence. I suspect all this kid did wrong was being born black.
