Chinese Women, Welding Masks & White Gloves - what up?

I'm not sure if this is just a West Coast phenom, but can someone explain the numerous sightings I've made of the Chinese Women who drive around town in various makes of vehicles wearing the giant welding mask visor while wearing white gloves?

It's just downright freaky - my Wife says that it's spawned from the desire to stay fair and not tan. I'm cool with the Tandoori Tan and never thought that white pasty skin looked all that hot.

Is it about looks or Melanoma? or something bigger in life that I just don't get?

Yep, I've seen those visors. Man do they look dorky. One of these days when I'm next to them, I'm gonna burst out with laughter or I'm gonna make a smartass remark.

Makes me wanna cry when I see them wearing that and driving a nice Mercedes. What a waste of a car.

I hate the ones with those visors. It's pretty ********. They don't do ****. Sometimes its a see-through one that is "orange" or some weird color like that. They don't know that UV can go through it.

Personally, I'm happy with my skin colour as is, and prefer no tan on my body.
I may look into this new fad.

I'm far from being traditional - I think Asian girls with all-over golden mocha tans are super-sexy vs. the glow in the dark white legs. Maybe it's from being a WestCoaster, but it looks so sad when it's the middle of August and you see someone who looks like they've been wearing pants for the entire Summer.

Visor wearers look like they have something to hide.

yeah it is true that in most of asian culture, generally white skin is praised as "pretty" and tanned as "not so attractive"

but here in canada, i see people wanting to be more tanned all the time and my gf gets so upset about her skin being so white

Car windshields block about 80% of UVA, and regular glass blocks about 50% of UVA; both types of glass block UVB effectively too. If you've got tinted glass, those figures are probably even lower. Looking like an idiot is sort of a high price to pay for the marginal decrease in UV exposure.

the visors are to block out the gamma radiation coming from the planet Zarcon, and the white gloves are an hommage to Michael Jackson.

Actually that's pretty much in all cultures where there are dark skinned people. Lighter skin is considered more attractive than darker skin. I guess it has something to do with being able to see a person's face more clearly or maybe some anthropological evolution thing where darker people were more feared because it is harder to see them (especially their facial expressions) in low light.
However when you get into cultures where there are lighter skinned people now days it is considered unattractive to be too light skinned....pasty they say. So pretty much the balance now days as far as attractiveness is somewhere in between too light and too dark.

Personally I think really really black african people, "so black they look purple", as they say, are totally amazing looking. I'm talking about the blackest of the black. Dunno from which part of africa they are from...I should try and look it up.
