Isn't that the converted card from Citi? If so then yes, lots of people here have it.

Can somebody make an argument that this card is somehow better than MC's Smart Cash?

I have that card and have been thinking about switching actually... here's my calculations

You save 2 cents/litre when fueling up at PetroCan -> so depending on how much you drive your savings varies. but at current $1.33/litre price this saving equates to about 1.5%

Now for everyday purchases you put on the card you earn 10 petropoints / $ spent. But the redemption levels suck...
VALUE POINTS SPENT %

Petro-Canada Gift Cards
$100 180000 $18,000 0.56%

Other Retail Gift Cards
$100 160000 $16,000 0.63%

BCAA Basic Membership
$87 60000 $6,000 1.45%

itravel2000
$500 500000 $50,000 1.00%

Fuel Savings Reward Card
$10 14000 $1,400 0.71%

The Works Car Wash (with fuel top-up)
$8 5900 $590 1.36%

Obviously the best value is the BCAA Basic Membership but even that is only at just about 1.5%... forget about redeeming gift cards you are just wasting your points. Even the "Fuel Savings Reward Card" sounds great at first (save 5 cents per litre! for 200L!!!!!) but when you do the actual calculation it's only a $10 saving for that card.

Now from time to time they will have bonus items in the convenience stores where you get bonus petropoints (lottery tickets, sometimes gum, etc, or 2x, 3x, 5x points promos) but their retail prices are typically higher than regular big-box stores so you're not really saving money there either - even though you get 20pts/$ for anything spent in the convenience store.

So the way I look at it is, this card is not bad if you:
- gas up exclusively at Petro-Canada stations (for 1.5%... at current $1.33/L price level)
AND
- love to buy stuff at the gas station convenience store
AND
- you were thinking of getting a BCAA Basic membership OR you only redeem the petropoints for car washes

Personally I'm thinking about switching to the MBNA SmartCash MC because that will give me more freedom when gassing up especially when I'm traveling to a place where Petro-Canada is not available. Plus it's 3%!

This way I will get my 3% cash back and when I do gas up at Petro-Canada I will just use my petropoints membership card (to collect petropoints) so I can still redeem for carwashes @ 1.3% :)

NOTE: Collect 10 points per litre on SuperClean™ or SuperClean 94 Fuel, seven points per litre on PlusClean Fuel and five points per litre on RegularClean Fuel and diesel. (from Petro-Points website)

oh for real...nice~ but well nobody would have got it since it just opened for applications :D

since applications are open, pretty sure the card is ready or will be ready very soon. Maybe someone should call in and claim they lost their card and see what the replacement will be :D

The card rewards are the exact same as the Citi one, except that it has no price protection.

The card is OK. But nearly everyone would get more return simply using Smartcash.

When all is said and done, I'm better off continuing to buy my gas at Canadian Tire, where I'm making at least an average minimum of 6% savings. Just as an example, I put 10 litres of gas in the tank yesterday. Paid for it with the Canadian Tire gift card I'd bought previously at the Gas Bar using the Smart Card, so there's 3% savings right there. Received in return, 50 cents Canadian Tire money by handing over this week's 10X gas coupon, which is equivalent to well over 3%. Can then save up the CT money over time to eventually purchase a $10 gift card in the store for more gas, or I can use the gift card I already have plus CT money to buy necessary purchases (preferably on sale) in-store.

Learned all the above here at RFD, with thanks.
