Cities with a subway in Ontario?
Just curious, and I hope I am wrong, but are Toronto and Ottawa the only two cities in the entire province of Ontario that have a subway system?

Oh not even in Ottawa? don't you guys find that a little embarrassing? I mean this is Ontario in a country like Canada and there is only 1 subway station, and even that is creating so many problems at city council lol.
What is with Canada and subways? why do we have such a hard time building them? it can't just be the money.

Most Canadian cities aren't densely populated. Subways don't make sense in areas that aren't densely populated.
Dedicated bus lanes and LRT works best in areas that aren't densely populated. Which is what Ottawa has.
And since this is a travel forum...Why haven't you been to Ottawa? It's a great city to visit.

I have been to Ottawa actually and I love it. Most memorable one was in 2007 to watch Brazil play the US in the Under 20 soccer world cup. But I usually stay for a few days each time. I really thought there was a subway system there.
Maybe you are right, but from what I know about Ottawa (nation's capital for God's sake) there should have been a subway there. No?

Toronto and Montreal are the only cities in all of Canada that have a true subterranean rapid transit system. A city has to be of a significant size and density (at least 2 million IMO) before a heavy rail transit system is economically feasible and our country only has two cities that fit that criteria.

No.
Ottawa is not a very built up city. Outside of a couple areas it's very flat and spread out, consisting of mainly single family houses.
Subways don't make any type of sense is low density areas. For subways to make sense you need a good portion of the population living in large apartment buildings and condos. And most of the population doesn't.

Just for a comparison between Ottawa and Toronto ( the actual cities, not the GTA)
Ottawa's population density is 316 people per square km
Toronto is 4150 per square km
They aren't even remotely close to each other in density.

Vancouver has the sky train system. Of it's three lines, one is mostly underground, and the other two or mostly elevated above ground. If I'd had to guess, I'd say around 70% is elevated and 30% buried.
In my mind it's basically a subway type system. It doesn't interfer with traffic in any way. And for much of the ride you can look at the mountains if it's not raining, so I'm fine with the elevated portion.

+1 The SkyTrain is great and acts as a subway in the core area.
