Anyone who buys a BMW/Lexus/MB/Porshe etc. will be influenced by the tag at least a bit.
If you want reliability/dollar get a Toyota. If your going to buy a car based on where it is on teh charts, there would be a lot more Hyundais on teh roads.

Just keep in mind that 'power' is NOT the only factor in tow rating?
More importantly than POWER, is the ability of the vehicle to STOP itself and whatever load its towing. I've seen more accidents waiting to happen with people not considering the STOPPING power of their tow vehicles and then having a 3000lb+ trailer w/o electric brakes to aid in that.
When we bought our trailer 2 years ago, even the dealer at the RV place said he couldn't believe what people would drive in with and think they could tow with it safely.

I realize that. I am not new to towing a trailer.

At the same time, one must realize that you don't need a 1 ton dually diesel pickup to tow a tent trailer. Most cars can safely tow a 2000lb trailer. Reese (and the other hitch companies) wouldn't make hitches for most vehicles if it weren't safe for them to tow.

The towing companies will put a hitch on anything. Just because they do it does not mean it's the right thing to do. You cannot expect a car that is 3000 lbs to tow something that's 66% (2000 lbs) of it's weight. You will end up with burnt control units and premature transmission failure.

No kidding!!!
I can purchase a hitch for my wife's Golffrom both REESE and the other major hitch manufacturer, I figured at least I'd be able to tow my bike around, it's only about 450lbs, but every single VW retailer/mechanic I've spoken to says don't do it, that car was not designed to tow.
It's amazing what you see at boat launches and the camp ground...you know if you're bending your hitch, SOMETHING is wrong, but there's lots of people out there that just don't get it.
