Commuters?
Anyone here commute/commuted through school? Do you reccomend doing so, did you find it hard to keep up academically and socially? Did you find the commute draining?

My boyfriend commutes to school (2hour commute from home to school). It's a pain...although he has his PSP and he does sleep on the buses. It sort of wastes your whole day if its not located near anything you want to do after or before school. Also you meet less of your fellow students than those who live on residence. I find both living on residence and commuting can have their own negative effects on your academic progress. Depends on your habits I suppose. If you know you'll go partying every night in residence and your grades will suffer...well it depends on you. I have friends who commute who can study on the subway/bus but I cannot do that cause I get a headache. I could never retain the information that way anyways.
Also, finding a job with lenient hours is tough unless you have a car.
If you cannot avoid commuting (since it sounds like you're just considering it) I recommend getting to know people who have cars.
I simply find commuting on the transit system entirely too depressing (I don't like the general public, can't you tell?)...I would feel like I'm wasting my life (I waste enough of it as it is
). That's why I chose residence, even if it sets me back financially. When I can afford a car, I don't think it would be such an issue since the drive between my house and my school is less than an hour or so (that's not including traffic).

I find the commute a good and bad thing. It is great to have a break from studying, and just to relax. Then it takes up some time. I have a 1 hour commute one way. I just read the newspaper and read my book.

commuting is ok,
use your time wisely. If your still tired in the morning, use it to sleep so you don't sleep in class.
On the way back, if you have a lot of work, use the time to study.
If neither is of any worry, I just do all the sudoku's from the paper and that eats my 45 min commute, or I play PSP, listen to music.
Just find something to amuse yourself if you don't want to study.

I used to commute 1 hour and 45 minutes to school everyday. (this is just a 1 way trip) But spend around 3 hours and 30 minutes in total each day.
Yes affected my grades.
When I have 8am classes, I usually had to wake up at 6am to eat breakfast and get there on time. By the time it hits around 2pm, I get tired and sleepy. I can't study on the subway/bus because i can't concentrate . Also, commuting made me even more tired. When I get home, I take a nap and end up wasting the whole day already and don't have the time to read. This wasn't the problem only with 8am classes. It was a big problem throughout the semester where I fell behind slowly. Also, i get even more tired if there are tests/assignments because i don't get much sleep due to working late until 1am-2am. Then end up sleeping for 6 hours which i couldn't handle. I do manage my time....but the day goes by very quick each hour. Think about it...you gotta eat dinner, shower, relax a little, and read/do homework for 5 courses.
After half way through the semester, i had a friend who live near my house and dropped me off when going back home. I paid this person $20 every 3-4 weeks.
Trust me, commuting more than 1 hour and 15 minutes is stressful.
Now my new school is only 30 minutes away by walking. and 10-15 minutes by TTC

I used to commute my first year. Usually it took me 1 hour 45min. I live in Mississauga and I'm in Ryerson University. First I took Mississauga Transit bus along Hurontario St to Cooksville GO station, then GO train or bus depending on time. After arriving at Union station I had to walk close to 15min to University. Not much fun, after few months, it really gets annoying.
but what can you do? I think best option is to transfer to UTM, but it requires some kind of transition. I am glad I'd moved closer to GO station, it's only 10 min away from my apartment, so it should kill 30 min at least. My biggest delay was using Mississauga Transit bus as it always stops on Square One terminal for good 10 min. that's why I used to get up around 5am for 8 o'clock class.

1st year I commuted on Brampton/Mississauga transit 1.5 hours each way. I hated it but got along fine. Did my readings on the bus and it was OK but I wasn't too happy.
2nd year I drove and it was only 20-30 mins depending on traffic. I loved it. I got involved in many activities and clubs.
I found when I had such a long commute I just wanted to leave school right when my classes ended since I had 1.5 hours until I would get home. Not a good thing for meeting new people in University.
I'm on co-op now and it takes me 1.5 hours each way again to get to work. I love this time. I find it so relaxing on the subway and GO train to just read a book/newspaper or listen to podcasts/music. I even watch tv/movies sometimes on my iPod. The commute has become the most relaxing part of my day.
