I connected my desktop PC to my Sony HDTV but I get only picture but no sound, how do I get sound? I'm currently using the wire that you connect your PC monitor to your computer tower(blue wire). Is there a different method or is there an adapter that would work?

Are you using DVI out from your computer to DVI in on your TV (or possibly even VGA cable)? These cables do not carry the sound signal. A separate cable (3.5 mm on both ends) connects the TV and the computer to provide the sound. HDMI cable would carry sound if your computer has HDMI output.

I'm using the VGA from my tower, to connect to TV, my computer does not have HDMI.
Is there an adapter or someway around it instead of getting a new motherboard?

If your TV has auxilary 3.5mm (headphone jack) audio input, you're in luck. Otherwise just grab some speakers that will plug into the jack and you're good.

Most TV's will either have a 3.5mm headphone jack or the the red and white RCA jacks right next to the VGA input. That is what you would use to get the sound from your laptop to the TV.

HDMI is by far the best way to go if your tv has it.
If your videocard doesn't have an hdmi out, look into buying a new video card. HDMI a is pretty common output on cards these days, and are pretty cheap (even cheaper if you go the used route).

Forgot to mention that I'm trying to use my TV to watch movies loading from my computer instead of watching it on my computer monitor lol. I have a wire with 1 white and 1 red end and the other end is black(like audio) if that helps.

If your using a VGA cable. You need to hook up sound with a sound cable...
Like this
VGA doesn't carry sound. So that cable above, goes into the green color plug on your computer (where you plug your speaker into) and the other end goes into the 3.5mm jack on the TV.
So if you see this picture.
There's a green color plug round one. That's where the 3.5mm cable goes!
If you can do HDMI, that will carry sound and video
.
The HDMI cable looks like this
Depending on your computer. You might or might not have HDMI.
Also... If you can do DVI, the quality will be better than VGA. DVI looks like this.
Same thing as VGA. Hook up the DVI to the DVI connector on your computer and the other end goes to the TV. Then you have to use the 3.5mm cable as I mentioned above because without it, no sound.
So in the order of quality you have. HDMI then DVI then VGA.
edit: The other posters here mentioned using RCA cables, but this might be a mild headache because depending on your TV you can't use RCA cables and VGA or DVI at the same time. My acer TV is like this, if I want to use RCA (I have to set the source to RCA) so I can't do VGA or DVI.
Sorry about styling :lool:Last edited by george__; Jul 28th, 2012 at 03:05 PM.
