It's more like every semester is 4 months. 3 months of school + 1 month of final exams.
Summer breaks are usually 4 months for everyone.
Don't know much about Engineering but most people take 5 courses. I wouldn't be suprised if people took more than that (6-7 courses).

Actually, Dalton McGuinty is instituting 6 month semesters now due to many students complaining (starts next year)

It depends on your school. Queen's has 12 weeks of class followed by 3-4 weeks of exams (with 3 "study days" between classes and exams). I know some schools have 13 weeks of classes. Queen's students are usually gone by April 30th. I had friends at UofT who had exams at the beginning of May. And some of my McGill friends started the last weekend in August, I think they had 13 weeks of class.
Engineers usually take 6+ courses. In first year I was taking 8 courses, but some were worth less and gave very little work. For example, for the first semester of one course, I just had to write in a journal once/week. Another only had computer based labs, and they were optional, so we only showed up to write three tests.
