That seems like a pretty short life for the ps4 pro if a ps5 comes out next year already. Not sure if I'm a big fan of upgraded consoles every 2 years (or so).

Interesting report. I would say 2019 would is the perfect year for a PlayStation 5.

The PS4 is doing very well right now. Sony sold 20 million PS4s in the fiscal year ending March 2017. They are expecting to sell 18 million units this fiscal year despite competition from the Switch and Scorpio. I think the PS4 would have long legs like the PS2 and do well after its successor is released (especially in developing markets of Eastern Europe, Latin America and India).

If Sony does launch the PS5 in 2018, then games such as The Last of Us 2 and Death Stranding should avoid the PS4 and go straight to being PS5 exclusives.

I'm also interested to see if this new PlayStation hardware is actually a portable device. There have been leaks that Sony was patent a Switch-like hardware design. Could Sony design an ambitious PS4-portable machine that could play all PS4 games seamlessly in handheld?

The Gran Turismo games on PS3 are not good either. Polyphony Digital is not that talented anymore.
XBox really only has Forza and Halo going for it as far as top level exclusives go.

The best racing series to play is Mario Kart IMO. Outstanding multiplayer locally or online in every iteration of the
series and the single player modes are also great as well.

Next-gen Playstation predicted for a late 2018 release date by an analyst according to Gamespot.
The source allegedly correctly predicted Slim and Pro PS4s before they were announced.

This is starting to get annoying especially for someone such as myself who tends to hold on to every console. I know I'm not the only one to be annoyed by this. Not sure if releasing a new console every two years is a sustainable model either. Sure many people compare it to buying a new phone every two years but forget that cell phones come heavily subsidized. Plus every app you purchase is compatible since it's part of the same ecosystem and runs better with the new phone so there really is no need to hold on to your old phone. Not the case with consoles. Only option with consoles is to hold on your old consoles or re-buy the same damn games on the next gen.

It makes sense for xbox to release the scorpio since xbox one was underpowered and unable to run most current gen AAA games at 1080p but without first party exclusives it's going to be a tough sell to even the most diehard of xbox fans. I also get Sony not wanting to fall behind the power curve but really with 80 million units sold by next year, 1st party dominance and 3rd party deals, there really is no need for them to be in such a rush to release a new console. What do they expect 80 millions users who bought their console to do with it once PS5 comes out? I personally just bought a PS4 Pro this year so expecting me to Pony up more money next year is way too soon. Plus I've effectively given up on my backlog and I am still having trouble keeping up with all of the new releases. The industry is starting to reach a saturation point where gamers just can't keep up.

Well it is just a rumor, one I'm highly skeptical of at this point (it doesnt make a lot of sense for the reasons you listed) no one is forcing you to buy these things.

Additionally If Sony releases a PS5 next year, I dont think anyone will support or buy another half step like the PS4 Pro.

We are already getting practically photo-realistic graphics on the base model of these machines, Am I the only one that sees no reason for a complete refresh?

Personally I don't mind next-gen consoles coming every 4-5 years. The more options the better IMO.
PS4 and XB1 released in 2013. Late 2018 would be 5 years exactly.

Most console cycles last 4-5 years going by history before the next generation system releases from the same company.
The Wii U lasted about 4 years before the Nintendo Switch stopped its production.

The base models are pretty good for what they cost these days especially with sales hitting sub $300CAD but there is still tons of room for improvement if technologies like VR and 4K gain traction which they seem to be. The Pro isn't an ideal long term solution for either. There is a lot a PS5 can offer but I'm not sure how much the average console gamer cares or is willing to pay if it does launch as soon as 2018-2019

I just finished Uncharted 1 and started Uncharted 2 remastered. I had fun with Uncharted 1 and it played a lot better than I remember but my goodness that 1080/60 upgrade goes a waaay longer way in Uncharted 2. This version looks as good or better than some of the new releases from the last few years. What a crazy deal for $10. Played a couple hours of TLOU:R as well and that looked and played way better than the PS3 as well but I still find that game dull compared to Uncharted. They're obviously completely different games but I think Uncharted is a far better show of what Naughty Dog can do

Hardware is fine, focus more on the games.

Microsoft's rush to have the top of the line console is going to backfire hard, especially with no games to surround it. New Halo, Forza and Crackdown isn't enough to sway any other console owners, no matter how good they look.

Yah, I would be all over an xbox if they put games like infamous, uncharted, god of war, last of us, horizon zero dawn, etc.... As awesome as the Scorpio might end up being, it ends up being a workhorse with no games for me to play :(

There are a few misconceptions here. I know many people think that Xbox Scorpio is MS answer to PS4 Pro but in reality Scorpio has been in development for years. They always intended to have a high end and lower end system. It makes sense to release now that parts are cheaper. You'll still be getting a ton of power in that box at whatever price point it eventually releases. Then again MS need to do something to get developers and games back however. They could have just admitted defeat this gen and released next Gen Xbox but it would be suicide to release next Gen xbox with another Halo Gears Forza Crackdown. Also if PS5 releases next year that might not give Xbox Scorpio enough time to gain traction.

On the other hand. Destiny 2, RDR2, SW BF2, COD WWII will be HUGE. What if Scorpio runs these games at 4k or 1080p/60fps and Ps4 struggles to run these games smoothly? Scorpio needs to come out ASAP and at a good price point. Destiny comes out in September and people will already have started to buy it on their console of choice which doesn't even include pre-orders. Tough time to be an Xbox owner.

Don't people find that Sony has also been remarkably quiet given that E3 is just around the corner? They could just feel like that have nothing to prove with over 60 million units sold and will let the games do that talking or they could be just waiting to see what MS announces before reacting . MS has a huge habit of sticking their foot in their mouth.

I think you're vastly overestimating the amount of interest people have in these things because the PS4 Pro would have sold like gangbusters if what you're saying is true.

The Scorpio is going to be 100% for Xbox owners - for all the information they've given us so far, there's absolutely no reason for a PlayStation or Switch owner to buy one. Especially if they haven't up until this point (with all the Xbox One sales that have happened, they practically give them away).

Microsoft is completely out of the loop this generation. From the beginning to the end it seems - they completely missed what made them great last generation. They were the go-to place for friends to play for all multiplayer games and shooters, and they had a VARIETY of games backing them up (Fable, Lost Odyssey etc.)
