Constant back pain, help me find a better mattress?

So in last 1.5 years i have changed 3 mattresses so far. The latest mattress that I have tried is Endy's. For first few days i slept well on the mattress but now when i sleep, I woke up with a back pain. the back pain is mostly on the upper side of the back (between shoulder blade). I am a side sleeper. I never had this issue before but then again, before i used to sleep on the floor.

How can i find what mattress would be good for me? Is there a way that I can do some sleeping test? Or some recommendations from some professional? It's been months that i haven't been able to sleep for more than 5 hours a day ... I wake up sleepy and cranky. Any advise will be appreciated.

Go see a chiropractor to see what may be out of alignment with your back and then ask for a recommendation for a mattress, maybe it's a new pillow you need. When I had back pain, I slept hugging a body pillow ...

thanks, but unfortunately i haven't had good experience with any of the chiropractor i have been to so far. All of them starting ripping me off the moment they learned that i have full insurance. if you have a good recommendation (preferably Mississauga) then please let me know.

Do you have a partner or spouse you sleep with?

As for me, I didn't know I was grinding my teeth until my spouse pointed it out to me. I got a mouth guard.

I find when I don't put it on for sleep, I'll be in a tense state and end up sleeping in positions where my shoulder hurts (somehow, my hand goes behind my head) or on my stomach with my head on the back of my hands in waking up multiple times with my arm asleep. This results in back aches, shoulder issues, etc.

But when I use a grind guard, I stay on my back and sleep alot better. Also, I use two pillows. One flatter and but further back, the 2nd, more fluffier and angled slightly at the front. So you can imagine it makes my head set in, and helps prevent turning. But I'll turn anyways when I don't wear my mouth guard.

Basically, it is my opinion people may be turning due to tension or stress from grinding teeth, and it results in turning the body to compensate and hence body aches. Far from this being guaranteed, but it is worth considering. An eye mask too also helps with getting into a deeper, more relaxed state of sleep.

I agree that seeing a chiropractor won't necessarily help, as it's more of a treatment vs aiming at preventing that bad sleep. I use a Zinus 4 inch memory foam mattress topper from Amazon which I think is similar to Endy. I found that really helped me as well.

I'll also add, without the mouth guard, I too couldn't sleep more than 5 hrs, woke up with constant headaches, not feeling rested, cranky. Ever since I implemented all that, it's worked wonders and allows a full night's sleep. The mouth guard is from Shoppers in the oral care section.

Are you sure its your bed?

Back pain, If not physical, is often mental.

Tension, emotional stress, new job, change in lifestyle. I would speak to your doctor about this and see what they recommend. Also most mattress companies have 100 day free trials. If you convinced its your mattress.

This book helped me through my back pain.

A couple things to consider:

- Are you in shape? Not to sound rude but I used to have this issue but after losing 30 lbs, I don't have this problem.
- Have you had an ultrasound for kidney stones? This type of pain in the shoulder blades can be typical of those who sleep on their side and have a stone. This is easy enough to test for.

You already changed 3 mattresses. So maybe it's not mattresses. You should go and consult your doc.

Thanks a lot everyone for these answers. Really gave me so many ideas to try.

@at1212b yes, my dentist had recommended me to use mouth guard, i used it for couple of days then stopped. I will start using it again and will see if it helps

@angelarfabela - Will consult doctor too.

@Hiotosan thanks for book recommendation.

@hightech well lately i am not in shape. not fat but just got some extra punds on my belly. I am working on it. I am 5'11" and weigh 202lb ... I need to reduce my weight to 180lbs. I have recently started playing tennis and doing regular cardio. hopefully I will continue. thanks for the tips though

OP, unless you are an athlete of sorts, that is quite overweight and no doubt has an impact on your sleep quality. This includes breathing and of course pressure on your joints and muscles/bone worsenkng sleep quality.

I'm about the same height and notice a huge difference in sleep quality when weigh low 160s vs 170. I definitely recommend to shed the weight as well.

You need to lose about 20-30lb fatty.

1) Put down the fork you disgusting excuse for a human.
2) Do P90X or Insanity. P90X has a lot of stretching and Yoga so you'll realign your filthy soul.
3) Continue these steps until you're sexy. Sexy is good. Anyone that says big is beautiful hasn't seen the top 10 most searched women on pornhub.
4) Soon the only back pain you'll have is from keeping all the babes away.

Remember, you can catch flies with honey, but you'll catch more honeys being fly, amirite?

most of the time, it's not too bad. There's the seasonal flare ups of inflammation, which feels like soreness after a vigorous workout. I just have to control it by exercising and taking NSAIDs (only as needed), and getting treatment like massage or physio.

Thanks for asking :)
