This is a drain water heat recovery unit that recovers heat from the hot water flowing down the drain by pre warming the incoming cold water.
Savings and ROI can be quite substancial, depending on usage, especially if you have some sort of subsidy in your province [source].
For maximum efficiency, #1 is preferred (result into equal flow in/out), for Quebec, only #2 is allowed by code.
They used to sell them directly for $450 when I inquired last year, Costco.ca started carrying them a month ago for cheaper!
The 42inch/3.5ft (TD342B) 3" model has a 42.8% heat recovery efficiency, 3/4" CopperLoc quick connects and 2x flex couplings
DWHR will be required by code in Ontario starting next year.
Cheaper and simpler construction than the Power-Pipe by RenewABILITY, their equivalent R3-42 model retails for $650
EcoInnovation is also the exclusive supplier to Manitoba Hydro for its province-wide DWHR for New Homes Program
Save 20-40% on your hot water bills now!
Calculator here: http://www.ceati.com/calculator/, use the C3-40 model for calculation, closest in efficiency to the TD342B

I personally ordered the TD340A (similar to the G3-40 in the above calculator), 46% efficiency but only have a 1/2" inlet/outlet and is not CSA certified, 8 psi loss @ 2.5 GPM vs 1.6 psi on the above model and cheaper at $225+35 shipping directly from EcoInnovation, add another $10 if you want PEX adapters, will be receiving it next week but won't be installing it right away as I will be replacing all my drain pipes as well.
I figured since I'm using 3/4" PEX anyway, low flow fixtures along with a tankless water heater, that it will do the job just fine, I checked my water pressure and it's a 80 PSI, so I'm not too worried.
