the sears one is 1/2 instead of 3/4 and it includes a surge protector but no battery backup, why is that one better? is sears warranty better? they are the same price

Bought this opener last year. Powerful, quiet and easy to install.
Can't go wrong. You may be able to find cheaper Craftman openers at Sears when they go on sale.

Do you need 3/4 hp?
If you have a heavy door then, 3/4hp is the way to go. Otherwise if you have a standard 7X15 door or smaller a 1/2 hp will do. Canadian Tire had a Genie on sale last week for $199.99. 2-3 button remotes, chain drive, keypad etc.

If you are looking for a 1/2 hp model, homedepot drop prices on some Chamberlain models.
I bought this one: 1/2 hp, chain, 2 remotes, keypad, sensor, lifetime warranty on the motor for $220

They have another model for $175

I'd stay away from the Genie's from CT. I just had 2 of these Chamberlain set installed by a Pro a few days ago and he said that he wouldn't even touch Genie's because they're crap and that he didn't want to come back for further repairs.
Crasftsmans are also good though, I think they're re-branded Chamberlains with subtle differences in some parts.

I bought 2 of the $220 ones (2x3 button, keypad) and 1 of the $174 ones (2x1 button remote, sensor)
Belt vs chain isn't that big of a diff at all. I can hear either one from inside the house, the belt is just a bit quieter outside.
Please note, the $220 ones have a better lit wired button and 2 bulbs on the motor. the $174 one has a dimmly lit wired button and a single bulb on the motor._______________

The $429 sears one was on sale last weekend for $299, not sure whether it is still on by the end of this week.
