How can I tell if it's a Samsung panel from the info?
You got one of the masked sets, not sure the reason behind that but some runs (around late 2016) on all 49"-55"-65" had a firmwares with masked panel model. No reason to believe its a different panel than Samsung because all those with 49" sets that had firmware properly reporting panel model reported the Samsung SVA panel.
I did a quick comparison with my LG 27" 4K monitor, which I bought last year for 379. I love this LG screen because the color is so natural (IPS panel).
You can see from the pictures my LG shows more details on Rihanna's bxxbs, the black detail is not so good.
Compared to an IPS panel the SVA panel will give you better contrast (so deeper blacks) but wont give you "as wide" viewing angle.
You can't judge the set before feeding it 4K videos to see it running at its native resolution.
I haven't found a good configuration for this TV so I might or might not return it. The speakers are loud but sound like you're kicking a tin can, very small amount of bass.

If I did not compare this to my LG, I'd say the screen quality is good.

If anyone figures out a good setting please share :) In fact, I think sharpness 50 works for me..
Follow the calibration guide in the owners thread and calibrate the set to your own viewing environment, copying settings will just mess up the picture.

Whats a better deal this haier or the hisense from the source for $100 less?

even though they are both 49" reading the dimensions online for each tv says the haier is a fair bit larger than the hisense.
seems odd.

Yeah I'm finding it difficult to get good blacks. Like the poster above, the blacks kinda just lose all detail.

How did you calibrate the TV ?
Check the owners thread I linked above, make sure you calibrate brightness and contrast per the calibrations instructions. You might need to reduce the backlight as well.

According to the specs the tv only has a static contrast ratio of 1200:1, so I don't imagine the blacks get all that impressive. I just picked the tv up tonight, so I am to see for myself tomorrow.

Which Hisense is that ? the one currently on sale @ the source is the 1080p 48" set for $50 less.

But then it gets down to $260 plus tax after the email promo code, and EPP discount.

If you want 4k, then the one at The Source is no good. If you don't care about 4k and want a 1080p + Roku TV, go for The Source one.

Ah, ok, but no wonder its smaller in dimension, its one inch smaller on the diagonal, and also not really comparable not being 4k. So you are paying less and getting less.
And you can cut the $90 difference even more if you go get the Avera version of this TV from newegg ebay store for $299

I am having this issue where the TV will turn on by itself after I turn it off. It is hooked into my computer. I turned CEC off.

Any ideas?

Any soundbar recommendations to go along with this TV?
Would be for a bedroom so it wont be played loud at all.
I was thinking of using my existing computer speakers (old logitec z 2300) and getting a splitter but I want both computer & TV to be able to use them. Is this possible?

So is this worth the price. Wouldn't mind a cheaper 4k set. I don't expect a $2000 set. But picture wise is worth it? The 49" I have a bose sound bar so don't care about cheap sounding speakers..
