There's two different Garmin traffic serives
1. analog fm traffic receivers used in older Garmin GPS units (LMT) that don't offer much traffic information (400 series/qew, dvp)
2. Digital fm traffic which is offered on certain newer Garmin GPS units (hd traffic or LMTHD models). The traffic info should be similar to Google maps traffic. This service rolled out in Canada last year

I think HD Traffic is better but not offered in Canada.Wrocky wrote: ↑May 19th, 2017 9:26 amI haven't had any issues getting map updates with my Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT and it's about 6 years old. I would be very surprised if they offered lifetime maps and then didn't honour it.
Garmin Traffic is available in Canada. from http://www8.garmin.com/automotive/nulin ... erage.html

Even Google Maps can be misleading at times. Last week when picking up someone at Pearson, I was directed to take N. Sheridan for 4 km, doing so would have saved me 5 minutes. When I got back on the highway, I saw this white BMW with some pink stuffed toy/doll in the back in front of me (he/she was behind me when I exited because I had to overtake or I'd go insane) and that driver must have just driven on the 401 for that entire stretch.
Types of traffic, aside from the ones on the 401 and DVP:

I would suggest the freedompop method for GPS navigation in the US (thanks to redboy69). Time is money and time stuck in traffic is ...

The lifetime maps work foreveritemsale2003 wrote: ↑May 19th, 2017 12:47 amI've used it in the US an the live traffic works just like google maps. I don't think you can get that in Canada (I have enough data so have never tried traffic here). The only drawback with Garmins is that they keep discontinuing their models (there are so many ??LMTs out there). Once discontinued, free map updates are a hit and miss i.e may or may not work.
The only issue is if you have a VERY old device you may run out of memory
(so either do not install areas you never go, or add a memory card)
Traffic works as well in Canada

I called Costco Etobicoke and they confirmed the only stores with stock in the remote vicinity were Scarborough (3 units but may be a system error and you should confirm), Kitchener, and Sudbury.

I gottaa 6 years old Garmin Nuvi 40, and I just updated the map yesterday. I remember the life time policy is as long as you update the map every year (no more than 4 times each year), you can get the update
