Hmm, pretty good deal. Haven't really seen these go lower than $140-150.

Hope this isn't location specific as it looks like it's clearance price ($XX.97).

Take note that the drive inside this thing is a Hitachi and not WD.

Smoking - guessing it may be clearance though - I think this price was around near Christmas and was hard to find back then?

That's a good thing if you ask me, I've had way better experiences with Hitach HDDs then WD.

Is this store specific? Isn't that what the * in the top right hand side of the price tag means? Anyone spot this in other stores?

I just picked up 2 at the Richmond Hill Costco location (35 John Birchall Rd Richmond Hill, ON). Called and they had ~50 in stock. The tag is there with all the 3TB cards, but you'll have to ask the cashier for them.

Im thinking of cracking these open and using them in my NAS. Any thoughts on that?

Yeah, looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26OEIjagmM4

But that's weird...Hitachi's 3.5in business belongs to Toshiba (only the 2.5in business belongs to WD). Well, WD owned ALL of Hitachi GST from March to May 2012, so I'm guessing this drive was manufactured during that short timeframe, 'cause I can't see WD buying 3.5in drives to Toshiba instead of using their own WD drives. Except if lack of supplies or some weird agreement between the two companies to address WD's plans before WD was forced to sell part of HGST to Toshiba... Not sure what the warranty of a Toshiba/HGST drive is into a WD enclosure, if you open it...

are you using RAID in your nas? Software or Hardware Raid? ZFS? Unraid?
These are important questions when choosing NAS hdds

If they are hitachi's its a great deal for all those applications.
WD and Seagates can be bad for Hardware Raid.

Be aware though if you crack them open you likely don't have any warranty :(
There is always a % of drives that die right away so it would be a shame to have NO warranty for "Dead on Arrival" drives.
