I did this before a couple of times, once for a textbook and once for a DVD.
Something they did in the customs paperwork indicated that it was an RMA so I did not pay anything in customs.

Cross Border RMA experiences??
I am in the process of sending my 2x1gb kit of Buffalo Firestix DDR2 back for RMA. Since its past 30 days ncix dosn't handle the rma. I have the rma number sorted out and they suggest i use fed-ex to ship it. Is there anything special when it comes to customs paperwork? I occasionaly send freight across the border at work but not parcels. For freight it is a real pain in the arse..
Plan to go to fed-ex tomorrow.
p.s. the Buffalo RMA process seems fairly quick. sent in my rma request and next day got a RMA number._______________

I have sent back RMAs several ways, and usually if you write that it is a warranty issue, defective part, rma, etc., then you should be fine. The last one I sent was thru canada post, and they have a form where you can declare stuff like value, defective, etc.
I have dealt with customs on both sides and am VERY aware of all of the paperwork that has to be done with freight, customs brokers, etc., but you should have no problems, no fees, and no headaches.
Some companies are VERY good with RMAs. I have had pretty good experiences, usually getting resolved within 1 week (Xshipping, etc.). The only problem I had/am having was with a year old APC backup power supply. I called, they sent me a new one saying they would pay return shipping, etc. I called several times, but almost 2 months later, the old one is still sitting here. I guess I'll eventually end up recycling it if they don't want it back. I received the new one the next day by purolator, which was the fastest experience I've had.
