Cross border shopping

Hi everyone,

Just wondering, does anyone know how you can get your tax refunded if you buy something from the States? I got ding $100us State tax. I bought a tv. totaling $1200 with taxes.($100us tax) So, if I cross the border to Canada, do they charge me HST taxes at $1100 or $1200

There's no state tax refund in the United States for foreigners, much less Canadians.

1. You can't get US sales tax refunded (at least not on that kind of level, I don't know if you can if you're a large scale commercial exporter).
2. You will get charged based on the total amount that you paid, including US taxes and shipping fees (if applicable), so $1,200.

You would get charged on the total amount paid so in this case $1200.

I buy items from amazon.com and get charged 7 or 8 % sales tax and when I bring the items cross border at Point Roberts, I'm charged 12% on top of the total price again.

You will be charged 13% HST on the total amount paid so in your case you will have to pay 13% on the $1200 USD converted into CAD and then charged 13% on the converted CAD amount.

if you go before this Saturday night, grab yourself a Powerball ticket. Jackpot up to $550 million. 3rd highest in history. And yes, foreigners are allowed to win. Lump sum after taxes is $350 million approx.

Yeah but in the US there's tax on lottery, it's probably around 50%. Then again no one should really complain about winning $250+ million.

Yes there is for Canadians making purchases in the state of ND. Not sure about any other states that do this.

That's the rare state refund then, most border states used to refund taxes, but due to the volume of Canadian traffic they no longer refund the taxes.

I can tell you definitely that all the states around Ontario, where the OP is from don't refund taxes.
