[Canadian Tire] CT: Pro Ramp (12,000 LBS) $29.99

Got my oil changed last week and paid $35, so decided my next change I would do myself. Was recommended these in another thread and lucky for me they are on sale this week for $29.99 :D

Saw that too, but didn't want to post the whole Canadian tire flyer up, lol. Thinking of getting the 2 ton as backup to the ramp. These have good reviews, but Princess Auto has the 3 ton on say for $13 from another brand. Anyone have the Princess Auto one?

You guys need have extra safety when you are using plastic or metal ramps. If you google around, you will find cases of ramps collapsed.
There are no other ways around it, the safest ramps you can get is to build it yourself.

Also for jack stands, pin-style stands are a lot safer than the cheap ratcheting stands. If you are going to use ratcheting stands, you will need to have something else (other than your face) for the car to fall on to in case the stand fails.

Agreed, but similarly the most dangerous ramps you can get is also to build it yourself.

Putting your vehicle on ramps to do an oil change isn't a great idea unless your drain plug is on whichever end of the oil pan that oil will be collecting. Drain plug locations are decided by automotive engineers with a level surface in mind.

Not saying you're wrong, but how can do-it-yourself ramps be unsafe? We're talking 2x10 construction, right? Unless the builder forgets to use fasteners or staggers the boards or something ridiculously dumb like that, I don't see how it can be unsafe.

Your comment is so wrong I don't know how to response to it.
.
Like I said, google around. If you are getting under your car, you don't want to just play percentage, you don't want the ramps to work 99% of the time, you want it to have zero chance of failure. Or if it fails, you want to have a fail-safe.

I believe he is saying that with all the people out there who "think" they know what they are doing, they could just as easily build something that is far more dangerous than anything you could buy in the store.

Don't think for a second that there aren't people out there trying to make car ramps out of paint cans.

You just answered your own question. It can happen. And does.

Good point. Both my vehicles have the drain plug facing the rear of the vehicle, so I've had no issues. However, when refilling your oil, make sure you check your dip stick for the correct oil level while parked on a level surface. There's no better way to under- or overfill oil while up on ramps or a sloped driveway when using your dip stick as a guide.

That's why I said he is wrong. Building a pair of ramps are a lot easier than working under the car. Heck, it is easier than helping my kids doing their crafts and school projects. If you cannot build the ramps correctly, you have no business getting under the car.

2 pairs of chock at part source is a better deal at $10 (buy one at $9.99, get the second for a penny). They also have michelin 3.5 ton axle stands with additional locking pins on sale, which are safer than plain old ratcheting type axle stands.

dunno, but there's something about these that scare me... I guess the plastic ones scare me too after I googled them too... Always use jack stands! (I also throw my tire under the side of the car too if doing tire changes). I think I'll inspect my plastic ramps next time before I use them!

If you look at the link I posted, you will see that ramps simply will not fail. Now this one, I have seen it before, I don't trust it either. But you have to remember, our houses are built with mostly wood, if you design your wooden ramps correctly, it will not fail.

I was thinking of something simpler like this

(the casters aren't very necessary, but you get the idea)
