Depending on what size unit you get, they come in 3 sizes, but the 36 watts replacement bulb is usually $49.99 but it's currently on sale for $25.99!
It usually lasts around a year or more, depending how much you use it. You can turn it off during the times your furnace or AC in not on. IMO yes it does work.

I have the 36W version installed for 3 years now. I believe it works. During the first year we saw a noticeable difference when someone was sick with a flu virus, others in the household were less likely to become ill.

We also wash our hands often as well (before meals, and after using the washroom, and when sick). Just plain old regular soap and warm water.

It's been a year since I last changed the blub (it was off during the summer) so it's probably going to complain that it needs a chance soon. Great price on the replacement bulb, I picked one up.

I always wondered about these things. Isn't the flow of air too quick for the UV light to kill the bacteria or what not? In other words, doesn't the air have to be exposed for a certain amount of time to effectively kill the airborne pests?

A high percentage of air is recirculated within the house, even if you have a HRV unit installed. I think it's repeated exposure to the UV light that breaks down the resistance of the airborne 'pests' and eventually kills them.

All my family stopped to have flu symptom next day maybe it is just coincidence, but I'd rather believe UV light works.
Very easy to install, only took 30 minutes. And the kit comes with the hole saw too.
Highly recommend to all my friends, especially for this flu season.
Don't waste you money on other stuff, such as sharp plasma air purifier. I have one in my bedroom, don't think it works.

You've got the wrong idea if you think the Sharp Plasma Air Purifier will reduce flu symptoms. The Swordfish can have an effect because it uses UV light, but the Sharp is for purifying the air from particulates; AFAIK it does not get rid of airborne bacteria (is it supposed to?). Mostly it can reduce allergy symptoms. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that it could reduce cancers since if it does a good job of filtering air (I have no way of knowing if it is or isn't effective), the air you breathe will be free of possible carcinogens (such as those that may be present if you live near a major roadway or industrial area and keep your windows open often).

uv light based filters cannot fight carcinogens or any air born toxic particles. Only uv sensitive bacteria or virus. It takes a filter system to remove allergic foriegn particles from the air . Really what could uv light do to asbestos dust or insulation particles absolutely nothing at all. Those or other dust like particles are bodies really have no way of combating only the scilia in our lungs and the hairs in our air passageways can hope to catch and try to filter. In our homes A combination of both would be best. Uv has just become an effective carbon filter alternative. I'd get one for your water supply if your that paranoid.

Above the air con coil is the best place to install it. This is a moist area in the duct which are perfect conditions for "nasty" things to grow. Once installed the coil and any related "nastys" will be permanently in the UV field.

For the second 2 questions, you should just leave it on, it uses minimal power.

I saw this in this week's flyer but ignored it. Guess the RFD effect is going to make me make an impulse buy.

Even if its a placebo effect, I guess $100 is worth the peace of mine. My tots wake up every morning coughing. Will this help? My humidity is at 50% right now, so I don't think its because the air is dry.

I currently have an electric air cleaner. Airborne pests are not clinging to dust particles are they? IE. this is still needed eventhough I have an EAC, correct?

My furnace circuit board has an EAC plug that gives power to my EAC (duh..LOL) only when the furnace is on. You can chain it to that. There should be something similar for the humidifier which also only runs when the furnace is on, so you could also use that.

I been using one for over 1 year now, don't know if it has any effect on the air quality. But, I leave it on all the time, I think by constantly turning it on and off would shorten it useful life span similar to a light bulb.
