when I first looked at that thing I did'nt have a clue what it does. So per the CT website here's the explanation for others:
************
Kills airborne viruses, molds and bacteria, dust mites
Easily mounted on your forced air furnace
Exposes your indoor air to powerful UVC light which attacks the bacteria that cause colds and flu's and aggravate allergies
Now includes 2" hole saw for ease of installation!
DIY easy installation (no more than 15 minutes)
LED tells you when to replace the lamp (after 1 year)
Provides clean and healthy indoor air
*************
so what's your review.....do they work?? How expensive is the lamp replacement?
thanks Frank

Indoor Air Quality
Indoor air quality has become a very hot topic over the last few years and as consumers we struggle to ensure that the ones we love are breathing, living and feeling their best.
We developed Swordfish to respond to these growing concerns about indoor air quality:
* Levels of pollution inside the home can be 2-5 times higher than outdoor levels. (Environmental Protection Agency)
* 50% of illnesses are aggravated or caused by indoor air. (American College of Allergists)
* Studies have also shown that one gram of duct dust can contain up to 50,000 bacteria. (Cornell University, January 2000)
* 65 million North Americans suffer from asthma (8 million children), allergies or other respiratory issues.
* 65-75% of infections and allergy sources are passed through the air.
* Some HVAC systems have been found to contain up to 27 species of fungi.
Testimonials
UVC technology used in hospitals brought to you at a reasonable price!
When you change your furnace filter it becomes evident how much dirt and dust is actually being captured. Swordfish kills those micro organisms so they cannot cause you bodily harm.
We are dedicated to developing healthy living products and providing clean healthy air. Swordfish technology is so effective that once you try it you will want to tell all your friends! Many of our consumers have been a big part of our product development process and we'd like to share the effect Swordfish has had on their lives.
Swordfish owners frequently contact us to thank us for the first night of sleep in a long time, or for waking up without headaches or congestion, or even for just breathing better!Last edited by patrob; Nov 29th, 2009 at 12:45 PM.

Depending on what size unit you get, they come in 3 sizes, but the 36 watts replacement bulb is usually $49.99 but it's currently on sale for $25.99!
It usually lasts around a year or more, depending how much you use it. You can turn it off during the times your furnace or AC in not on. IMO yes it does work.Last edited by patrob; Nov 29th, 2009 at 12:51 PM.

I have the 36W version installed for 3 years now. I believe it works. During the first year we saw a noticeable difference when someone was sick with a flu virus, others in the household were less likely to become ill.
We also wash our hands often as well (before meals, and after using the washroom, and when sick). Just plain old regular soap and warm water.
It's been a year since I last changed the blub (it was off during the summer) so it's probably going to complain that it needs a chance soon. Great price on the replacement bulb, I picked one up.
The whole unit is also on sale this week.

I always wondered about these things. Isn't the flow of air too quick for the UV light to kill the bacteria or what not? In other words, doesn't the air have to be exposed for a certain amount of time to effectively kill the airborne pests?

bought and installed last friday
I can't believe how well this little thing works.
All my family stopped to have flu symptom next day maybe it is just coincidence, but I'd rather believe UV light works.
Very easy to install, only took 30 minutes. And the kit comes with the hole saw too.
Highly recommend to all my friends, especially for this flu season.
Don't waste you money on other stuff, such as sharp plasma air purifier. I have one in my bedroom, don't think it works.

You've got the wrong idea if you think the Sharp Plasma Air Purifier will reduce flu symptoms. The Swordfish can have an effect because it uses UV light, but the Sharp is for purifying the air from particulates; AFAIK it does not get rid of airborne bacteria (is it supposed to?). Mostly it can reduce allergy symptoms. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that it could reduce cancers since if it does a good job of filtering air (I have no way of knowing if it is or isn't effective), the air you breathe will be free of possible carcinogens (such as those that may be present if you live near a major roadway or industrial area and keep your windows open often).

uv light based filters cannot fight carcinogens or any air born toxic particles. Only uv sensitive bacteria or virus. It takes a filter system to remove allergic foriegn particles from the air . Really what could uv light do to asbestos dust or insulation particles absolutely nothing at all. Those or other dust like particles are bodies really have no way of combating only the scilia in our lungs and the hairs in our air passageways can hope to catch and try to filter. In our homes A combination of both would be best. Uv has just become an effective carbon filter alternative. I'd get one for your water supply if your that paranoid.

Will get one set today.. Questions:
1. Best place to install is on return air duct or above air-condition coil?
2. How to set timer so it can go on and off with furnace (I have programmerble thermostat)?
3. Need surge protector? - just worry about if it is continue on, can be to hot to burn?
thanks for advise.

Above the air con coil is the best place to install it. This is a moist area in the duct which are perfect conditions for "nasty" things to grow. Once installed the coil and any related "nastys" will be permanently in the UV field.
For the second 2 questions, you should just leave it on, it uses minimal power.

I saw this in this week's flyer but ignored it. Guess the RFD effect is going to make me make an impulse buy.
Even if its a placebo effect, I guess $100 is worth the peace of mine. My tots wake up every morning coughing. Will this help? My humidity is at 50% right now, so I don't think its because the air is dry.
I currently have an electric air cleaner. Airborne pests are not clinging to dust particles are they? IE. this is still needed eventhough I have an EAC, correct?_______________
