I'm going to Pennsylvania for 2 days to do some shopping and will be bringing my laptop with me. So when I'm returning back to Canada are the Canadian customs guys going to charge me duties and taxes for my laptop? I'm worried that they might assume its a new laptop I bought from the states.

I've never been searched nor have I've been asked. I go to the states 4/5 times a year and I always bring my laptop. If yours is new, perhaps bring your receipt as proof of purchase.

It's very unlikely that they will think that unless you bring the box with you or something. Also, if the keyboard has French characters like most Canadian laptops it will be obvious that it was purchased in Canada. Some of the stickers at the bottom of the laptop will probably be in French too.

Go into Canada customs office on the way into the US and they'll issue you a receipt to prove you had it on your outward journey.

Me and my husband always travel with our laptops on our backpacks and never had problems. Someone told me that if you bought an item from the US, it contains a different serial number or bar code than the ones here in canada and officers knows it. Just to make sure, I would take the advice of our fellow forumers to bring any proof that you bought it here in canada, just to be on the safe side.

Unless your laptop is brand new, you're not going to have a problem...
People always think that is if a BSO sees technology they're gonna think it came from the US... Doesn't quite work that way.
Anyways, if you're still worried, before you leave Canada, stop at the Export door and ask for a Form Y-38 to be filled out. It's a small card that will show your laptop was with you when you left Canada, that's all you need._______________

Don't forget kids, on RFD it's not about your experience, it's about what you get paid.
