I wasn't really thinking about increasing welfare for the poor but more like increasing opportunity to people in poverty, especially the children, like more funding for schools, scholarships, afterschool programs for the kids, and skill training for the adult. I am sure if the US gov spends the money for war/military on improving poverty, it can think of way better solutions than I can.
*shrug. I've always had a hard time believing the 'situation beyond my control' type of attitude. I put myself through school, pay off my own student loands, and work 50 hours a week to do so. I have a hard time shedding tears for these people.

I don't believe the solution is to throw money at the problem though. It's too early in the morning for me to look into the welfare situation in the US, but we have exactly the same poverty issues that they do. I'm sure if we were to look into it, we have similary poverty levels by percentage as they have. And I do know that we have all kinds of support for these people, including free skills and trade training.

A good solution would be to pack them all into a boat and ship em to Greenland. A few months over there and I'm sure they'd come back with a different attitude.
