Sooo much misinformation and xenophobia in this thread.

And I thought Koalorka was bad, but you take fascism to a whole another level. Fortunately, most Canadians do not agree with your fascist views on immigration. If you want the bad immigrants from coming in, then we need social reform (cut all social benefits). Only then will you get the hard working and contributing immigrants while the leeches stay away.
The fact you believe that our government needs to step in and stop hard working immigrants from coming here and competing against Canadian citizens is exactly what is wrong with this country. Government needs to stay out of the free market and let the free market take care of everything. If a foreigner that immigrated to Canada can do your job and willing to work for half of what you charge, then too bad. Competition and the free market is what allows countries to prosper and drives up our standard of living, not the fascist ideal of society that you're trying to push.

I know a lot of internationally educated/trained engineers (even from Asia) in my field, who are making as much as Canadians, if not more. Most of them became Professional Engineers after clearing the technical exams. Even the ones that didn't are still making maybe 10% less than a Canadian P. Eng. Of course, most of it is dependent on your skills, rather than your place of origin.

I grossed 133k last year in IT and all I have is a HS diploma. If you're good at something and you're resourceful I don't see why you should limit yourself. Especially if you're young. You've gotta be bold and make some moves though. Perception also plays a role. If you act like you're worth 40K then that's what other people are going to value you at as well. Your post is reflecting this attitude. You should change it for starters.

What kind of job do you work?
Even dead end jobs can have some opportunity.
If you work as a server... You could become a restaurant manager.
If you work retail... You could do the same. Retail managers can make up to $45k/year.
If you work as a bank teller... You could become a manager or sell investments/accounts.
Even a janitor can move up. I know cleaners who saved up and bought their own carpet cleaning machine. They contract their services to large companies and clean carpets. If you can find the clients, you'll make tons of money !
Theres always opportunity in seemingly dead end jobs. You just have to show you have what it takes.
But its understandable that some people don't. I've met some people who just don't have the confidence or leadership qualities required to get ahead. That is also something you can work on, but its hard.
I've done the same.. I work a lot of entry level jobs. Now I do something that makes me and other people happy.
Hang in there buddy.

this post is extremely accurate. especially about westerners working in the middle east (and other arabic countries). My friend told me if I went to work in algeria on a contract I'd be treated like a king.
I've lived in alberta all of my life and we don't not have a sizable 1st generation european immigrant population. There are some here and there, but there are 10,000 times as many asians, indians, etc.
I have met quite a few polish, a few germans, some ukrainians, etc. But really when you compare them to the number of non-european immigrants they're insignificant in number. And the one's I've met all speak perfect english. But anyway...
Not that I really care. I just haven't seen what you have.
I can understand what mark77 and all of them are saying, but at the same time it's kind of pitiful. Stop feeling that your birthplace entitles (i hate the word, but it's fitting here) you to certain things that our parents had. I realize that the government is corrupt, but that probably isn't going to change, especially not by whining about it on the internet. Just do the best you can like everyone else (especially immigrants) are trying to.
