Oct 4th, 2003 05:28 AM #153I just used the FTP program to change the permissions. Worked fine for me.Originally posted by chillin@Oct 3 2003, 10:21 PM
anyone know how to go about changing directory permissions. they don't let you chmod the dir and you have to go through their control panel.. can't find the fricken thing
One thing I couldn't do was use my domain held at DomainPeople and do a CName change and point a subdomain to my new space. e.g. Lets say there is www.whatever.com and I'm trying to have yeah.whatever.com pointed my new space. It worked, but then something kicked in and now I get a 400 error screen come up.

1 And 1 purchased a big 2 page advertisement in the PC Magazine new issue. Their advertisement is not for their payed plans, but dedicated to their free plan. I can imaging this will rack up a lot of customers.

I see them investing in the future. Give away a few 100,000 free accounts and then afterwards, a fair bit of the people that have been usining it for the 3 years will just pay the coin to keep it running. It could work out really well for them.

Everything worked fine this morning. Went out for 2 hours now I can't FTP or access site through explorer or netscape.
Servers went down maybe? Can still log onto the control panel though. Same for anyone else?_______________

Working fine for me so far.
Uploaded my plainjane HTML tech site running since 1997
No problems, actually quite fast... I am defintiely impressed.
I've even transferred over a .com address to it (needs a few days for the DNS to propogate)
Yeah, it is very possible for a free service to exist for a while. Some older people may remember the Original Geocities was ad-free, then they went to small ads, then they sold out to Yahoo for like a half a billion $ and charge $9/month now.
Free to start is a perfectly viable business model for webhosting (especially if you have fiberlines that are nowhere near full utilization, its doing no good empty)_______________

I just have to post again for those who think this is some gimmicky fly by night outfit. It is excellent. Not being a wesite pro, I've had to ask for help on quite a few occasions and every time got the help I needed. They even said they preferred to talk on the phone as opposed to email. There is no wait any time I've phoned and they've always resolved my problems.
I don't work for them. Don't know them but it really is a great outfit.

Do they have the right to "discontinue" this free service after any period of time they see fit within the 3 years? For all we know, they can discontinue the fee service in 6 months, leaving alot of people with the choice of paying up, or finding another hosting company, which they will be faced with paying for anyway. Remember hotmail and many other "free" online services? I bet many people decided to just sign/payup rather than the hassle of finding a new email provider, etc.
