if you take a look at the whois info, notice the "suite number" meaning it could possibly be an office. So I highly doubt it's an one-man operation, tho that suite number might be condo
This does look too good to be true. We haven't seen free things like this since the dot com bubble burst. Interesting though, eh?

they have a good idea though, if they provide good service for the next while they'll get alot of word of mouth advertising.
either they'd spend the money on real advertising or bite the bullet and cover costs for the accounts and get word of mouth advertising that would probably be more effective.

they give you a s1234567.onlinehome.us domain.. you can register a new one, transfer one from another registrar, or just update your domain from your current registrar with their dns info

Actually, it's one of the largest hosting companies in the world! You can see a mention of 1&1 at http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2003/07/..._providers.html
But comments about their service have been mostly negative...

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.p...threadid=178887
There are some positive comments, too, though...like at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.p...?threadid=76626
It's worth checking out if it's a freebie.

i'm a pretty cautious person

being big in europe would explain why their domain was registered so long ago without being used until now. But big doesn't mean it's run well, as evident by the fact that their expiry date is so close. Although it's not accurate, they are updated within a few days at most, and often every few hours.
Most of the even smaller hosting companies prepay their domain for 10 years or so, so it's sad to see a big name company this poorly managed. Remember when microsoft forgot to renew the hotmail.com domain name? LOL... this could be a repeat!

if the service ended up good and and the price was right would you not recommend it to friends? they're spending a chunk of their advertising budget on that instead of ads on sites.
if you think about it.. they have the infrastructer allready and have the income to handle the initial debt of increasing server space. I'd be pleased if more marketing schemes went this way.
