I've been spending several hours getting my website setup with them (thanks for letting us know about this deal!) and so far so good.
The signup procedure is unlike any I've gone through before, it seems they have a database of valid streets and postal codes which they DO check, they also call you back at your tel. # to verify it's correct.
3 years of free hosting does sound mighty suspicious but if this is a scam it's been very well thought out and lots of time/money spent. Their control panel is the best I've seen, much more feature rich than Ensim or Plesk.
Still working on setting up my cgi and will report back with more comments.

I've got a few cPanel accounts and want to try other control panels.

Any word on how long this promotion will last? I like the 3 years of free hosting, but I'd like to wait and see how everyone else finds them...
Also, their 'privacy policy' seems a bit 'loose', as it were, but not really much worse than any other place, so I'm undecided as to whether there's any potential for abuse (telemarketers, excessive spam, etc)...

"Suite" can be used by mailbox too.Originally posted by AdidasROXX@Sep 25 2003, 07:20 PM
if you take a look at the whois info, notice the "suite number" meaning it could possibly be an office. So I highly doubt it's an one-man operation, tho that suite number might be condo

Wow, just noticed this. That's pretty good for being FREE. Sounds like just don't register a domain name with them ever and you're safe

This is cool.
For me, the whole 4-step sign-on process took about 20 minutes.
I'll be looking forward to playing with this when I have some time.
By the way, the promotion ends on December 31 of this year. (that is, you have to sign by then to get the free offer.)
I still wonder what the catch is, though. Mama always told me theres no such thing as a free lunch. (TNSSAAFL)
Cheers,

Do you have to buy a domain from them? Or can you buy one from another registrar, say GODADDY, and use their DNS information?

I signed up as well, took the automated call on my cell, now my account is created and ready - but my web, FTP and SSH accounts don't seem to be functional yet. I guess for free I can wait.

Do you need to forward the domain to the address (x.x.us)? Or are the pages linked like http://www.myowndomainfromsomewheree...ywebpage.html?

Sep 26th, 2003 01:16 PM #45When talking specifically using technical terms, you always have the option at domain name registrars like Namecheap.com to "forward" a domain name to the account you'd get at 1and1.com.Originally posted by mrken@Sep 26 2003, 02:04 PM

A much better option is to configure your domain name registar (again, let's use Namecheap.com as an example) and register 1and1.com's DNS servers (example, ns1.1and1.com and ns2.1and1.com) with them. Then whenever a request came into Namecheap.com looking for your domain, it would pass the request on to 1and1.com's DNS servers, which would then redirect the request to your 1and1.com account.
Uh. Long story short, you can use http://www.myowndomainfromsomewheree...mywebpage.html.
Edit: See 1and1.com's FAQ on "How do I use an external domain?"_______________
