Deals on hardwood, ceramic tiles & carpets? Anyone?

My wife & I just got a new place and it needs a lot of renovating. Does anyone have suggestions for great deals on:

- engineered hardwood flooring

- ceramic tiles

- carpeting

and places that install them well at good prices?

Since I live in Vancouver, I can't offer you any deals. I can say that it's worth spending more money on good flooring. I just installed hardwood floors on the top floor of my house, and I just love it! No more carpets. No more dust. No more allergies.

Why get engineered floors when you can spend an extra $1 sq/ft on real hardwood? One more thing: buy lots of thick felts. You'll thank me later.

I would limit laminate floors to a basement. You can probably install them yourself.

As we bought a condo unit (another thing I forgot to mention earlier - sorry!) I believe we cannot use hardwood floor - only the next best thing which is "engineered hardwood" - different from laminate as it still has real hardwood in its surface layer, and more of a particle type wood in its lower layer. At least from reading a few websites that is what I am led to believe.

In terms of carpet we are probably going for the popular Berber (bedroom, office), for ceramics the reddish-brown clay-like tiles (front hall & kitchen), and then engineered hardwood of some type for the living/dining area.

Please send other comments and Toronto-area good deal suggestions for the above three items.

They did our whole house - ceramic front and kitchen, hardwood main, Burbur carpet upstairs, as well as backsplash in kitchen.

Their prices are VERY good, especially for install. Three of our friends that bought new houses went to them. One of our friends lives in Etobicoke, so they're willing to travel to install.

2cm of solid red oak. Still trying to find a matching wood filler to cover up some scratches from moving the furniture around.

I have a friend who just installed hw floors in his condo. As long as your condo doesn't have a lot of humidity, it should be fine.

You should get enginneered flooring if your building is constructed with a concrete slab and/or you need sound insulation.

Real engineered hardwood is expensive thene solid hardwood about 1 or 2 dolars also you have to use glue for installation and installation will be 1 dolar more then solid hardwood installation

I would suggest to get laminate which looks like real solid hardwood with beweled edge (avalible in solid hardwood size ,some off them short some long )
it is 12 ml thick and yo dont need glue or any thing floating floor also you can use soundproof underpad which some condominiums required
also you need new baseboards

OK I got prices for ceramic and hardwood floor - Does anyone know how much installation labour would add to the price? Say I have 500 Sq FT of ceramic - How much would labour cost?

some strata councils make you put on a special sound absorbing underlay such as cork if you are installing wood or laminate floors.

as for tiles. lots of places sell them for .99 a 12" tile or less. it all depends on quality. don't forget u also have to spend money on a mortar bed and grout.

tiles can go from 69 cents a square foot up to five, ten, fifteen bucks a foot depending what you want. same as anything. get what you pay for.
