It's okay if you really must get a 500GB drive. 1TB+ ones are more worth it in terms of $/GB.

You can also PM with ME (wait until their sale ends tomorrow):

But hey, at least we're getting back close to the $40 range for a 500GB pre-flood.

2tb for $40 was hot pre flood. 500gb was slated to become $10 bargain bin last fall, but since production hit the bricks, manufacturer's realized they could milk money off old overpriced product.

Once the 1/2/3/4tb and above becomes standard fare at $40/$60/$90/$120 at every back to school sale in 2012, a lot of retailers are going to be stuck discounting 250gb to 750gb drives under $20 to get them to sell.

I'm not saying you'll be able to walk into your mom and pop computer shop, or go anyplace online and pay that, but technology prices have a tradition of ramping downwards in august and september. That'll mean the drive prices are only going to fall.

There were many 2tb for $39.99 doorcrasher sales mid last year, and 3tb drives can be had for $120 to $150 right now with the right sale. Entirely feasable a 4tb drive could approach the sub $150 mark taxes in later this year, the demand is there for data storage.

By september we are hitting almost the one year mark since the floods. Production has to be getting back to normal by that point.

In any case, my point is anything over $20 is overpriced for a 500gb drive, since they will be close to free by the time 2 to 4 tb models hit the marketing sweet spot again. Unless someone has a gun to your head insisting you purchase it, I would wait and save some major money.

Sure, if the production was actually hindered that much in the first place. However, I don't think that was the case:

So no 4TB hdd for $150. Try $200.

+1 to this :

Seriously maybe more 40$ is not bad,

But it's like having a deal on 512mb PC133, Yeah maybe staple sell them at 75$ but you'd be an idiot to buy something this outdated.

majority of the drives are either made in Malaysia or China, it's just a good excuse to increase price for WD/Seagate after Thailand flood... that's smart business practice, shame on them

Found in clearance area for $50 less 25% = $37.50
Was $89.97

Seagate Expansion USB2.0 drive 500 gig
model # ST905004EXA101-RK

SKU = 426125

Yes it is "old" and USB2.0 but for $37.50 - you can't go wrong
- good for the pron stash

Why was my deal for a $37.50 hdd at Staples merged with a crappier deal at RBC?

Excellent price. YMMV, I assume.
