What do people think of the desktop deals? I am just looking for something for a work machine (i.e. no game playing). I need a dual monitor setup. I was thinking of the

Inspiron 660 Desktop with Intel Core i3-3240, 8GB RAM, 1TB HD, Windows 8 - $399.99

On the business side they have the same machine but with 500 gig drive with Windows 7 pro for the same price.

Originally I was going to get one of the IBM off-lease machines to replace my oldest machine here (an old celeron) but now that it is sold out I am going to get a new machine to replace a Dell Pentium e5400 (or something like that) with a machine with more memory and faster processor.

You could try dell refurb stuff. Not as attractive as IBM off-lease though.

Cheaper, but not necessarily better than the i3 option you were opting for. Though much better than Celeron you currently have.

I'm assuming this isn't too time sensitive given that you didn't pickup any of the black friday specials. Dell just had the insp 600 w/ core i5-3340, 1 tb, 12gb ram (everything else the same) for $479. for $80 more this was a much better buy imho. i'm guessing there will be a series of rotating promos from the usual cast of characters over the coming weeks, so just keep your eyes peeled. i've been told by many that shoppers kept some dry powder handy for this exact reason and that the season for "deals" is just beginning. no one believes the hype that once these "doorbuster" specials are gone, you'll never see them again. hey, for all we know the configuration i just described will probably go for $399 in a few months.

Wow, I think that's the best price on the U2312HM I've seen by far at $169.99

That's the price I picked it up at a few months ago.
I've seen it a bunch of times at $180 but this is definitely the best price I've personally seen it at. Amazing monitor.

was this ever available at $299?

I was on earlier this morning and it wasn't in the list, then I saw it for $349, then I waited and it's still $349... now it seems to be sold out.

the item was not showing up for me this morning, then when it did, it was $349. must have been added later on (it was in the top row and impossible to not see it) and I missed it.

it is not a bad price, especially given that it can be upgraded, unlike those stupid asus vivobooks with sealed cases, soldered on ram and batteries, etc.

I was very interested in this as well until I read some horrible reviews and moved on.

How does the U2312HM compare to the U2412M? Only difference is monitor size?

U2312HM is the regular 1920x1080 display shape (16x9 aspect ratio) like most monitors and TVs, while the U2412M is 1920x1200 (16x10 aspect ratio) which is better for many types of computer work because of the extra vertical pixels.

I seem to recall the U2312HM having lower input lag in tests than the U2412HM, as well.
