McAffee isn't software that you buy. It's bloatware that you remove from a new PC before installing real A/V software.

What software do you people recommend then?

I tried Norton and it really slowed down my laptop to a crawl so I had to delete it.

I've been using web root for the last couple of years and love it. Pair that with spybot search and destroy, malware bytes and combofix and you should be okay.
