If all I did was occasional light to moderate gaming and primarily used this as a productivity app machine, what am I giving up in this configuration that I could get in a machine with a slightly less powerful video card but more of....?

It depends on the productivity use, the i7 8750H is a top-shelf CPU in the consumer laptop space (ignoring ultra expensive i9 offerings). If you wanted to do any reasonable video editing or photoshop, you benefit from the GTX 1060. Numerical work nowadays may also make use of both the CPU and GPU, depending on application.

What do you gain by downgrading the graphics card to a 1050ti while keeping everything else? You probably save money, if I were to guess, maybe an additional $100 to $150.

The build I'm promoting might've been the system I would've bought had I not gone to an all-out desktop solution.

Could someone please share a uniday code with me :)

Also, does the $100off$1300pc code stack? I'm probably going to pick this up.

Compared to the $1099 Microsoft Store Dell G3 17 that was on sale before, the main justification for the effective $200 price increase in this laptop is the 16 GB RAM (the processor is negligibly faster than the i5 in single core and a bit faster in multicore), the better wifi card, and possibly worse screen (not AUO panel like in the G3 17). For most, best to wait for another G3 17 sale if it comes.

Though RAM upgrade alone could be worth the $200 if you're gonna use all of it.

Interesting. To my untrained eye this seems like it has a lot of desirable features including an IPS screen (is this anti glare matte?), full numerical keyboard, thunderbolt port, 1060GTX, 2x2 WiFi, i7 8th gen professor, 16gb ram...! The knock on it re a slower hard drive is an easily addressable concern with a faster HDD or SSD drive swapped in. I also prefer a 15” footprint vs the 17” previously on sale.

Now need to convince myself the 6 year old T420 I have is truly unsatisfactory to make sense of this purchase ;)

For $168 more, you're getting:
- 8gb more RAM
- i7 8750h vs i5 8xxx (14% Faster)
- Superior WiFi Card
- Better Screen

As for the screen, the 15" IPS FHD screen seems to be reasonably adequate, certainly better than the non-IPS offerings that have come before it. The Microsoft Dell i5 machine had a non-IPS screen, a likely inferior panel.

All-in, I'd say that's a pretty good delivery for the price. Especially since the $1099 price you're quoting is in the past.
