Dell G3 laptop opinion

For a 14 year old whose 5 year old laptop is really beginning to show its age and battery problems. She does play SIMs on her current laptop and it is unknown if other games will be played.
She will be entering highschool next year and is interested in the arts so there may be a need for art / video programs. Again, unknown.

Of course, she mentions a new laptop AFTER black Friday.

Currently have a 250Gb SSD which can used to swap out the HDD included.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/p/dell- ... chspecstab

Looking for comments and suggestions if something better is out there in same or less price range.

TIA

I would probably wait now for the Boxing Day sales.

That laptop on the Microsoft site says it's out of stock. Looks like a good deal though.

As others have said, wait 4 weeks for Boxing Day.

If that's the case then that laptop looks like a good deal to me. The only thing that I hate (now) is that it doesn't have an SSD. If you know how to then you could always do that on your own. Just watch out for a deal on SSD drives. Then use the 1TB drive as an external storage drive.

yes, I upgraded her current laptop with an SSD so will just swap it out and put it into the new one. I haven't been watching laptop prices so wasn't sure how good of a deal this is.

I bought that laptop on the 22nd, and it came in on the 27. I am happy with it, you can keep the 1TB HDD for storage, there is a NVME slot you can use to add a SSD for applications that needs faster load time. It also supports Intel Optane Memory if you want to go that route. The 1050ti is decent as well, I am playing Overwatch on an external monitor at the following setting at 60fps.

Thanks for taking the time to add comments about the laptop. One slight concern I have is according to dave2d review of the G3 is that it runs quite hot.

Have you noticed that?

Did you pay the current price of $750?

I don't notice it hot, but I am using it with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse with the lid closed, and the laptop is no where near me.. So even if it did, I wouldn't know. Yes its the same price I paid on BF, it is the cheapest "gaming" laptop I could find with a 1050ti.

I took some temperature measurement. Keeping in mind, the laptop is running with lid closed, so this is temperature of the top lid from the outside. After a couple rounds of Overwatch.

Top Right 24C
Bottom Left 20.3C
Bottom Right 21.4C

Thanks.

I bought the G3 and have until mid or end of January for return. If something better comes up, I can return this one.

One thing which I didn't expect was no type c port. The picture on website clearly shows it. The rep said they would issue a ticket.

Apparently only the G3 models with the 1060 have the USB-C port, the lower spec ones don't have it.

I ordered that laptop on the 26th and I expect to get it early next week. Will post my thoughts then.
