A few points, with respect:
1) I quoted a poster who provided a Dell AMD system that isn't significantly impacted by Spectre/Meltdown, if this is a concern.
2) 'Real world' performance losses are in the range of 1% to 14%, typically around 1% to 5%. See the table linked below, provided by Intel, look at the nearly identical i7-8650U performance:

I do not buy into this logic that retail consumers need to wait on buying a laptop. Commercial IT purchasing is a separate issue, so are specialized application users such as those mentioned in this thread (myself included). For most individuals, this laptop is more than fine, it's a great performer.
