Trying to help my sister replace her current HP laptop for university. Some people thought this was a good deal at 850, now at 650 is it not even better? Mediocre at best?

This is a better gaming laptop deal than the staples deal below

staples-hp-envy-17-i7-4700mq-gt740m-2gb ... v-1577413/

Similar GPU.

pros: much better screen, better build quality (latitude is very nice).

cons: much weaker CPU, less ram.

but this machine is much better because the CPU and the GPU are balanced, whereas the HP envy has a top of the line CPU yet a middle class GPU.
Bitcoin will crash hard.

The only bad thing about this deal is the memory, but it seems to be easier upgradeable from the bottom.

The Envy deal has lower resolution, slower HDD, bigger to be carrying around.

What do you mean? Specifications say "8X DVD+/-RW". I think "No Power DVD" is for the PowerDVD software by Cyberlink.

I would highly doubt it. You're looking at a 15.6 matte 1080p with gaming capability. The only other system that comes into mind would be the Lenovo Y50 and I don't ever seeing that going to $500. If anything, it'll be limited quantity and most of us will not be able to grab it. Dell sales, at least, are typically high in stock/availability, but I've never seen the Latitude 15 3000 with these specs going lower than $650 (it was $699 back in May).

Nice. Maybe it was the Lenovo that made the drive an extra $option. Oops.

FYI: According to this review http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Del ... 885.0.html, this laptop may encounter thermal throttling issues. There's a software called throttlestop that can probably circumvent this but you can potentially damage your hardware if you run it too hot. External cooling devices, regular dust cleaning and low ambient temperatures would help, but above all, make sure you know what you're doing before you start using throttlestop.

FYI when looking at the benchmark in the review http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Del ... 885.0.html, scroll over the FPS to know the game settings/resolution.
Thanks I saw that in the review but I didn't know about the scrolling part. Doesn't work on mobile of course.

I forgot either video or a post, but a guy talking about clean and reapply thermal paste on the cpu and it works a lot better after that.

Anyway, the notebookcheck review was running a stress test when throttling happened. It shouldn't be a problem most of the time... I hope...

From the review:
We reran 3DMark06 directly after the stress test in AC mode. The result was identical with that of a cold state. Consequently, performance losses should not occur in games. The CPU reached temperatures of up to 76 °C in AC mode.

The only thing that caused throttling seemed to be was when they ran Prime95 and Furmark run for at least one hour.

For something with some gaming performance, it does pretty darned well, it seems. Should I dig up more of the reviews I've read?

I am just worried there may some design flaws that may cause the laptop to run hot during normal usage excluding gaming which I hardly do anyway. My ThinkPad T420s has a tiny heatsink in comparison and struggles with AOE 2 at low settings. :(

Is there any extra way to get some extra rebate like an email signup or something like that?

There are some codes here, but the system complains that they are already expired.

http://www.dell.com/learn/ca/en/cabsdt1 ... n-codes-ca

You generally can't use Home & Home Office coupons on Latitudes. Otherwise they are here...
http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/topics/ ... &cs=cadhs1

You can get interest free financing with Dell Advantage when you spend over $899, but again, that only works with Home & Home Office systems.
