There are some seriously decent T5500/T3500 deals to be had. Xeon Quad Core/8 Thread processor, 4GB RAM/WIN7 Pro/Quadro 600 or Quadro FX1800 graphics for $350 after coupon. Thinking this to be a better deal than the Lenovos as these are newer Xeon procs.

Some decent laptop deals too.

I have one of these at work. it is freaking loud. the power supply and motherboard is not standard ATX, so if it goes out you have to rewire standard ATX PSU.

You won't be able to use ATX board in these cases because it is a BTX case, is everything is mirrored.

Just a heads up.

You'd have to be doing some pretty heavy CAD stuff to warrant really using the 4000

T5500 Loud ? It is one of the most silent machines around, unless it is under a major load for extended period.. I have well over 1000 of them deployed at the office. Only other explanations if yours is loud is that the chassis intrusion sensor is faulty, or somehow your fan is failing. These Dell Machines are designed with exact air flow paths in mind.. However when you open the side panel, this intentional tunnel does not exist, and cooling is compromised. So when the machine thinks the side cover is open, it will crank it's fans to MAX, which under normal circumstances you will never hear. Usually the Quadro FX3800 or now 4000 we have installed in these machine is louder than the machine itself...

In one room where we have about 20 of them installed (compilation farm - so no need for powerfull graphics), we replaced the Quadro FX 3800 cards we ordered them with, with some Quadro NVS295 basic cards (which have no fans, just heatsink) and honestly, even with all 20 machines running, you can barely tell any machines are on. (except for the temperature rise when the A/C fails) :)

For PSU, it is not a huge problem.. A typical newer EPS power supply would work perfectly well..Unlike the OLDER dell machines, the 24pin power plug is standard wiring. OK, you won't be able to reuse some of the quick connect modular plugs, so you would need to re-run cables like SATA power cables through to get the to drive cages, etc... But in all due fairness, if you had ANY modular supply, if it was wired in any decent manner to improve airflow and hide wires, you would have the same issues since connectors would not be the same, and you'd have to rerun the new cables if replaced.

Case, yes.. it is BTX.. But then again, most people will not reuse these cases.. Or most cases from OEM workstations in that case.. Try reusing a HP xw workstation case.. What a pain also.. Not worth it.. Some of the basic lower end PC series (Dell Optiplex, Vostro - or HP Pavillion, or emachines/gateway) use more generic cases, but the T5500 is designed as an integrated workstation.. Even the front panel connectors are custom, so not an easy mod anyhow..

YES, only one socket on Mobo and one other socket on a Dual CPU riser which is not always included (and it is normally installed behind the hinged drive cage).

I believe you can get a dual cpu riser for around 100-150$ and a second e5630 or e5640 for 100-150$, so 250-300$ to make it dual... plus memory etc
