[Dell] Dell XPS 15 Laptop: SandyBridge i3-2310, 4GB, 500HD, GeForce GT 525M, JBL 2.1 $699

Dell just rolled out its new Intel Sandy Bridge-based laptops and they look pretty shweet. A pretty good blend of new tech that you don't see on other computers at this price.

http://www.dell.com/ca/p/xps-l502x/pd?o ... =xps-l502x

2nd generation Intel® Core™ i3-2310M processor 2.10 GHz
15.6 in HD WLED TL (1366x768) with Skype-Certified 2.0MP HD Webcam
4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 Memory
500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 525M 1GB graphics with Optimus
8X Tray Load CD/DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive)
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1000
JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3
Standard Keyboard - English

Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
Integrated 10/100/1000 Network Card

Something to keep in mind is the i3 chip with the new onboard GPU (Intel HD Graphics 3000) that is no slouch. Look up the reports online and you'll see it could handle itself pretty well even without the NVIDIA discrete card.

How is this compared to the Gateway laptop from the Source?
Best deal (from excatly 20 years ago): 2 boxes (20 reams of 500) of HP 92 white papers from staples for $7.00
Back when staples price match and takes off 50% of the price difference. (2004)

Better processor
Graphic card only slightly better.

Not worth the price difference imo.

There might be an argument when you think about the price difference.

Does anyone know if the ram on the Gateway is dual channel?

The new GeForce GT 525M seems like a pretty good card. Any word on the performance comparison between the Gateways' and the Dell? I'm assuming the new architecture of the Dell motherboard, chip, bus, etc. would have a bearing on all this compared to the older hardware of the Gateway. I'm only assuming the better on-board i3 Graphics 3000 chip would help in keeping the battery life longer when the discrete card isn't in use. I'm not a pro so maybe I'm wrong.

I'm really torn between these two machines now. What does everyone think?

The recall was issued 2 months ago. Manufacturers and retailers wouldn't be shipping products out if it wasn't fixed. I don't think you have to worry if it is a new system, new config and from a reputable retailer.

hopefully that is the case, then i can start looking for some systems.
i notice gateway havnt released any new systems to FS or BB yet. I have had very bad experience with HP's desktop so I'll go with Dell or gateway depending on price.

Of course not... nothing short of high end business laptops have IPS screens. You won't find one on any laptop below $1500, probably not even below $2000.

Not bad I suppose, not hot though.
I'd rather spend the extra $200 (or less if there's a sale) on the i7-26xx (whatever that serial is) and much better screen.
In fact $699 has always been the regular price for a Dell XPS15 i3. The only generosity they showed right now is slightly improving their graphics card. The new i3 and old i3 shouldn't have a cost difference in the reseller's (Dell) pockets.
I suggest not buying this and wait for when it drops down to at least $599.

Note that the Source model does NOT have "switchable graphics" (or something like it) unlike THIS deal (conserves battery life).

Unless you game 100% of the time - I think this is a pretty useful function.

That said - price does seem a bit high (for me).
