Hey...I don't have an RBC account that I'm aware of.....and I got an email something like this
name is RBC Royal Bank and title of email is Alert: We are unable to verify your information. (April 14th,2012)
Dear Royal Bank Customer (myemail),
This e-mail has been sent to you by Royal Bank of Canada to inform you that we were unable to verify your account details. This might be due to either of the following reasons:
1. A recent change in your personal information. (eg: address, phone)
2. Submitting incorrect information during register process.
Due to this, to ensure that your banking service is not interrupted, we request you to confirm and update your information today by following the link below:

Hint, not having an account for them should be a huge red flag that its fake.
Also, hovering over the link, often it has nothing to do with what it says, or has additional domains.
E.g. the text says royal bank.com - hovering may reveal a URL in the bottom corner of cheapviagra.com or whatever.
The tricky ones are www.royalbank.com.ca/randomstringshere
Many people who aren't familiar with URLs see the first part and think it's legit - but you need to work backwards.
The parent domain is com.ca, not royalbank.com

RBC doesn't contact their customers through e-mail or SMS.
They will either phone you through their automated system, phone you directly or send you a letter to have you call them back.
Lot of phishing e-mails lately, not only from RBC but banks overall. Identity theft on the rise and online fraud on the rise all over the place.
Major breach few weeks ago with global payment affecting up to 1.5 millions of credit and debit cards, I bet lot of credit cards used in USA got replaced by the banks.
