There are all sorts of people at the protests with varying goals, but generally the protests used to be about showing the world's richest leaders that they should also think about the world's poorest.

Nowadays, the legitimate protesters are accompanied by anti-obama, anti-new world order, anti-capitalism, anti-police, etc...

Why don't they hold these at the United Nations every time or is that not its function? Even still, the infrastructure is there and I can't imagine the people of the UN use their facility every day.

The G8/G20 has nothing at all to do with the UN, for the very reason that the G8/G20 actually want to get things accomplished. That is why it is a small group of the most important world economies.

During an unlawful assembly or a riot, the police can and will use force and anyone and everyone in the area. In Canada, anyone in the vicinity of a riot is considered to be disturbing the peace tumultuously and force will be used against them. The wording may be slightly different in Pennsylvania and I'm not sure exactly what the act/law is called, but I can assure you it would be very, very similar to Canada's riot act.
