[DirectCanada] AMD A6-5400K APU - $38.98

Deal Link:
Price:
$38.98
More offers from DirectCanada
Appears to be the lowest historic price, at least for the last 180 days: http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/amd-cpu ... y_days=180

A few years old, but might be enough for a cheap build if you can get a cheap motherboard to accompany it.

------

Some rough examples of what you can do, you will need to do research and make sure you know what you are doing, just giving you an idea, also price match and such to get lower prices/free shipping in some cases.

Low budget build with a crappy PSU, probably similar to what you will get with prebuilt.

Don't expect much, but might be enough for a basic pc and some light gaming.

Better off buying an intel G for $20 more at 2x the performance.

I were an AMD fan from Athlon 750, the slot one CPU. I changed to Intel when they the iVy Bridge because I were building a hackintosh. I don't have any problem from Intel since then. This AMD is dirt cheap. But I'd like you to take a look at this cheap Intel as well, op.

No point in getting G3240 for $64 when G3258 (Unlocked Processor) is $70.

Great price on this. I can only think of a very few specific cases someone might actually want one like upgrading an old P4 box, but pair this with a $50 MB and the cheapest DDR3-1866 you can find and it might make for a nice little system if you want to do some (very) light gaming.

If I had the option of this or the a4-6300 at the same price, which would be the better choice for a cheap build meant for surfing the Internet and watching YouTube and movies?

I am currently building a HTPC and am just deciding on the CPU. I had the a6-6400 in mind but was wondering if this would suffice.

I will be connecting this to my 55inch TV and connecting esata Media Raid drive. It will be used for Hulu, Netflix, browsing, watching media (xbmc?) including 3D movies (for my 3D TV).
No gaming whatsoever.

My current parts:

Motherboard ASRock FM2A88X-ITX+ Mini ITX FM2+ $107.95
Storage Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB 2.5" SSD $58.98
Case Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced (Black) Mini ITX Tower $28.99
Power Supply Corsair 430W ATX12V
RAM (May use 8 GB 1600 Mhz that I have in my current machine until I can afford new 1866)

I do not think this CPU would work with 3D, would the 6400 be a better choice? I was also looking at the newer A6-7400 but could not find any customer reviews for it. I believe it is just a newer version of 6400 with option to use 45W instead of 65W which may be good for HTPC.

Any thoughts?

You will need a DXVA-compatible videocard to complete it. Otherwise, your PC probably will struggle with 1080P content.

Pretty decent processor for the price. I've been using two of them for my secondary rigs for the past year. Easy to overclock to 4.4ghz on stock voltage/heatsink.

Huh? A6-5400 is a Trinity APU featuring Radeon HD 7540D integrated graphics which features UVD 3.2, fully supporting DXVA and H/W decoding of 1080p content including BD 3D/MVC.

Yeah looks like a new deal, however you can get free shipping on orders over $50 on DirectCanada so a bit of a better deal if you add something else.

OR price match with NCIX with DirectCanada (which already has free shipping) - $54.99

Hard to say: http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/212/AM ... 5400K.html

A4-6300 is 2% faster in single-threaded programs.

A6-5400K in memory-intensive applications, the CPU is 3% faster.

A6-5400K is older, but also can be overclocked.

They seem to be the same price, if you don't plan to overclock A4-6300 might be slightly better in some cases.

A6-7400K is based on the newer Kaveri architecture where the 6400K is Richland and the 5400K is Trinity. Although faster I don't think the 7400K is worth the price when you can get the A8-7600 for a little more money.

There's not really any significant difference between Trinity and Richland but Kaveri is a real step up with the Steamroller cores and newer GCN graphics.

The 5400K at 39 is a good price, pair it up with a cheap mobo and 2 sticks of DDR3 1600 or faster and you'll even be able to do light gaming. These systems make for great HTPC's as well but don't bother with the 6400K, it's not worth the price difference as these chips are multiplier unlocked and hit around the same speeds if you overclock them.
