By ditching carbon-tax plans, Ontario's Tories become the Stupid Party again
All the contenders to lead the Progressive Conservative party are now against a carbon tax, pledging to either destroy their own party’s platform or conjure billions of dollars in cuts nobody will notice.

Pretty sure more than half of Ontario is against the carbon tax...

Not sure how going against its implementation equates to being stupid.

Any real conservative is against the carbon tax heist. A tax to go to work. A tax on getting your children to day care. A tax on just about all of day to day life.

The tax hurts those at the lower & low/mid class the most by adding additional costs to their daily activities as they struggle to get by. Where is the money they collect going? Is it going to be used as efficiently as possible or simply used as a slush fund by a select few? Is there any accountability for that money? How can you measure if what they money is being put towards will be helpful in the long run or if it is even beneficial? Can humans even stop/alter/influence climate change?

We've gone from global cooling concerns in the 70's to global warming in the 90's 2000's. Now it's called Climate Change as no one really knows what direction things are going. We've had major ice ages and melts without any human involvement but somehow government taxing us more will fix this!

No one is arguing that we shouldn't keep the environment in mind when we do what we do. Those who are against the carbon tax are not against the environment, that is terrible generalization meant to guilt people into trying to support it. If the merits of the program cannot stand up by themselves then we should rethink our approach to it.

Can we really expect anything from the conservatives?.

They dont even believe in climate change. They see snow and that is enough reason for them to say global warming is fake.

There are a few that say they "believe" in it but they have no answer or they hate every solution that is put in front of the table(ie. carbon tax).

How can they say they believe in climate change(possibility of extinction of life forms on earth) and they cant handle a little taxation?. Either they are lying or they dont care about the future of their kids.

in AB, they forced a carbon tax on everyone and then turn around and give it all back to the lower income families, if this was a "save the earth" plan, shouldn't the lower income people do the same savings and reducing?

Want to reduce carbon ..how about government ministers use tel conferencing rather that face to face meetings in exotic locations ...let them lead by example
How about they put the same control on all government agencies ?

good start

At least this brought it out as what it really is; another tax to pad government coffers and feed the ravenous beast called government programs. That's all the carbon tax ever was. Hopefully there's a provincial revolt in a year or two across the board and this nonsense tax gets kiboshed.

Another great thing would be if XXX PC leader wins the Ontario election on Brown's liberal-lite budget, then throws it out and starts cutting government funding and cutting down government jobs (starting at the top - Sunshine list - would be best bang and work your way down). You can cut practically every department other than healthcare and most Canadians would never notice a difference.

I'm against alot of taxes but the carbon tax isn't one of them. Its one of the few taxes that needs to exist because of the way the governments around the world have been subsidizing fossil fuel pollution. If you had to pay for all the externalities of burning fossil fuels upfront, then gas/oil wouldn't have been so cheap in the first place and the dangers of climate change would have been avoided by adapting long ago. Its not like we haven't known about the dangers of using fossil fuels...we've known about it for more than 100 years now.. People just love communist subsidies over a pure free market.

Theres two ways to look at a free market. The first one is to allow the subsidies to continue and let humans destroy everything. Eventually there will be consequences to these actions by mother nature and we will learn to adapt through pain. The second way is to see the dangers of our actions beforehand, put a real price on those negative outcomes and with those externalities factored in, the free market will make the corrections naturally without the harsh consequences of nature.

We have picked option #1 and unfortunately our descendants who will pay the price will be cursing to the grave.

This is why I hate conservatives/tories even more than liberals. Their stupid taxes. I will never forget Mike Harris for his emissions test B.S. back in the 1990's

Cons are just as socialist/commie as the liberals. No, they're worse. At least the liberals boosted min wage. The commie conservatives are happy to screw over our free market in order to benefit the rich. Patents, IP, infinite trademarks...these communist rules don't exist in a pure free market but the con jobs will never scrap these rules. That's 1 reason I despise the cons more than the liberals. They pretend to be capitalists but are just another group of neo commie scum bags out to line the pockets of the rich at the expense of the masses. If you're going to pretend to be capitalists, then don't support commie policies in any form.
