DIY Drinking-Straw Snoot

Just checked out a few "life hacks" on lifehacker.com and I happen to find this:
http://lifehacker.com/5439877/take-dram ... traw-snoot

The effect of the lighting in the sample shots look really good and I can imagine this would be superb in low-light shots on top of having the external flash.

Me being only in the "scene" for 3 weeks with my new T1i makes me wanna buy the 580EX. Something to invest in.

What do you guys think? Anyone ever tried it?

I've seem examples of it in use, and it in actual use, never tried it by myself.

I know it works, otherwise many many people wouldn't use it.

It just focuses the light in the direction you want more than the bare flash head that spills light everywhere.

It's a pretty old technique.

Ahaha yeah they both link to the exact same thing.

I've made one out of flex core (I think that's what it is called) and it works well. The only problem is that you will need to make snoots (or is it a grid?) of different sizes in order to have different sized effects.

Check your local Harvey's for black drinking straws. :cheesygri

I'll make them as soon as I need them. :o

No need for them yet. I rarely do portraits for now.

would you be able to change your flash distance and adjust its power to get some change of size? or is it pretty minuscule the difference

It all depends on how you construct it.
