DNS-323 - How to make a simple web server?

Just a quick question if anyone can help, I want to have a simple page or 2 with thumbnails of pictures which can be clicked on for a bigger sized picture. I have a DNS-323 as a storage device that can be FTP's in.

Is it possible to set up a simple webpage and have it linked to grab the photos from my DNS-323? If so, how?

So, you want to host it yourself with your own domain name etc?
Or just a place to deposit the photos?

If you want to host it yourself, the QUICKEST way would be to install IIS and HTTP services on a Windows XP or Vista PC..

But, getting it to resolve to a real www. domain is something completely different. Best way that I can think of, is to get a free domain name at no-ip.org and set it up on your Web server.

With IIS setup along with the no-ip agent, the name will resolve to the IP address no problem
I setup an example site for you, using my no-ip address:

If you want a professional www. site then, you are going to need something more robust, like Apache...as you are going to need a place to keep DNS records etc.

Onto aesthetics..
Here are a couple places to get free flash templates for photos, that work brilliantly and aren't too difficult to use. Once setup, you shouldn't need to do anything more than drop the photos into the photo directory and they will show up on the site. You'd have to setup IIS to point to "a folder on another computer" (aka your DNS-323) and you'd setup all the webfiles on there.

You'll want the lighttpd, php, and possibly MySQL modules once you've setup fun_plug

Download and install WAMP Server. It contains Apache Web Server, MySQL Server and PHP. Everything is configured to work with each other.

For the pictures, perhaps an overkill for what you need, but by far the best piece of software is Gallery. If you install gallery as well as one of the modules for creating thumbnails it will actually automatically generate all of the thumbnails for you. You can also arrange pictures by albums and control access to different pictures for different users.

Once WAMP is installed, Gallery website will have all of the documentation you need to install and configure it including creating a database.

Thanks Luthair, I saw that wiki but i'm not sure how it all works.

The DNS-323 can;t handle being a webserver (doesn't recognize index.html and such), I've tried many times. I'm guessing installing funplug and lightpd will solve that?

It sure will. I have a DNS-323 that I've been running as my photo server for around a year now and it's kick ass. I did the following:

install funplug
install lighthttpd
Setup a directory for web content

I then have all my full size pics on the DNS-323 and I periodically run a program called Jalbum (google it) which generates web pages for your pics. It works quite well and generates nice looking pages with several themes.

I also installed twonkyMedia on my DNS to handle media streaming to my ps3 and a Dlink MediaLounge.

Can't say enough good stuff about the DNS-323.

Thanks Guppy...installing stuff doesn't seem to be that straight forward.

I can probably install funplug but not sure about lighthttpd, do i install it via telnet?

Once it's installed, do I just use Jalbum to FTP it into any directory?
