Do I need to turn in my Canadian Passport when I renew it?
Just concerned since I'd like to be able to visit the USA after I renew for a new passport. About 2 months left on the old one. Do they keep it or let me hold onto the old one when I apply? thanks

Just tell them when you apply. They make special case for you. What I remembered, they cut up the edges and give it back to you.

They cut the corner off mine and gave it back.

One more year of tellin' it like it is.

Once they cut the corner, it is not valid.

I am actually picking up my new passport tomorrow.
Correct, they also stamp it saying cancelled.
But if you are driving to the US, you'll be fine.
I went with the cut corner and cancelled stamped on mine, they didn't ask anything and let us through very quickly.

Thanks all; any guess how long it takes to process the passport - I'd be dropping it off in person to a passport centre.

they cut the corner and give it back to you. Or they can destroy it for you. You definitely ain't using it again, that's for sure.

five-year ePassports next year and the 10-year books in 2013. Recommended rates are $160 for the 10-year book or $120 for the five-year passport – up from the current rate of $87.

Probably in less than a week. Over the past few years, the government has made the process very efficient. In the aftermath of 9-11, the passport lineup was so painstakingly slow that the government actually did something about it. I'm quite impressed. Unfortunately, the passport office is the only part of the government that is fast.

PS: Keep in mind that it's holiday season. So it will be 2 business days longer than usual.Last edited by laihama; Dec 24th, 2012 at 10:14 AM.
