Do japanese cars like toyota and honda really hold up to their name in terms of reliability?

2002 Civic DX 5MT - bought used, very few issues and I'm just doing oil changes and filter changes
2011 Accord couple 5 AT (MMC) - bought new, issues were recall on engine ECU to fix carbon deposit buildup, broken passenger seat backrest beam, trunk squeaky, premature brake rotor warping (refinished at 20k, replaced with my centric rotors and akebono brake pads at 105k because of the slight vibration when braking at higher speed) and now the VTC actuator grind at cold starts that my 8-year extended warranty should cover. My wife didn't seem to mind these out of the ordinary noises!
2016 RAV4H (MMC) - no issues at all except for liftgate ECU replacement because for some the liftgate gets stuck ajar. I checked truedelta and majority of the complain was on the liftgate and most others were one offs (e.g. lugnut broke, infotainment sucks -- it does suck but it's the least of my problems).
How can you compare Civic or Honda to an Audi??
However the new generation of Honda Accord got a lot of praise from many reviewers. Need to test drive this one :)

I only picked VW GTI as for comparison. I do not own one. People who drive Corollas/Camrys/Civic/Accord are the ones who compare their cars to BMW/AUDI/Mercedes lol. Of course they are more technologically advanced over the simple Asian brands. Just go and test drive any of German cars and you will feel right away the difference. I have owned both Asian and German cars and speaking from my experience as well. Fan boys are dumb, they would eat any BS to justify owning outdated product....
Just because you feel a German drives differently doesn't mean it's more technologically advanced. How do you come to that conclusion?

Why don't you test drive a 1995 BMW M3 and a 2017 Corolla side by side? Which one feels more technologically advanced to you?

I skydive (started last year), have motorcycles, cars and trucks. In all fairness, there is no such thing as reliability anymore. Please stop beating these threads to death. It's full of opinions.

That's not even all of them... Like every goddamb thread about which suv/cuv I should buy turns into a massive d**k measuring contest of who can prove what manufacture is more reliable than the next or someone straight out asks the question.

Answer is, no manufacture is more reliable than the next because all their parts are from the same shit bargain bins. Your precious Honda/Toyota/Lexus/Acura/Ford/Caddy/GMC/Audi/VW/MB/Lambo/Ferrari are all hand crafted pieces of shit. No? Prove me wrong... That's why no one drives the expensive ones and all the other ones are sold to the masses sporting 'german/japanese/british/blah blah engineering'.

It's all marketing, branding and everyone buys into their crap. And for some unforeseen stupidity, everyone needs to keep asking the same question.

I'm certainly not contending that, especially riding in the GTA. I'm just saying that you take on a new perspective on Mazda vs Honda vs Toyota arguments after getting accustomed to the road experience of a motorcycle.
Let's be honest; you're moving goal posts here. Driving a motorcycle is obviously far different than driving two different cars. That being said; there is a pretty noticeable difference between your run of the mill Civic LX and a Civic Type R. The Type R is going to be a far more enjoyable vehicle but it will in all likelihood be far less reliable as well. I enjoy driving and the thought of driving a standard Civic or Corolla sounds dreadful for me personally. I have no problem sacrificing some reliability for driving enjoyment.

For you, a car is an appliance. Your bike is obviously where it's at when it comes to enjoyment as a driver. I feel that way about a car and want something that is a bit of fun to toss around.

I'm only moving the goal posts for myself.

With that said, of course there is a big difference between a regular Civic and a Type-R. But what about, say, a Mazda3 vs a Golf? Is there really a meaningful difference there? Even if you take motorcycles out of the equation, both of those cars are still just appliances. At no point is any $20k econobox "fun to drive". If you think driving a Mazda3 is fun, then you don't know fun.

I personally wouldn't buy a Mazda 3 but given the choice between say a Mazda 3 and a Corolla I would take the 3 any day of the week. I had the unfortunate privilege of driving a Corolla a few years ago when my car was in the shop after being rear-ended. It was a dreadful experience. The car checks all the boxes but it was beyond lifeless. It's packed with features and devoid of personality. The 3 may not be an exciting drive but it is far more enjoyable than the Corolla could ever hope to be. At least the new Camry is quick, even if it isn't particularly engaging. While not necessarily exciting, not every econobox is as lifeless as a Corolla.

People on DriveAccord were comparing the 2018 Accord with the A4. I would never compare my Accord to an A4, I have spent far less on my Civic and Accord's upkeep to even bother and my self-respect is not based on the cars in my household.

I'm not delusional to compare my car to anything but to walking out in the cold or taking the bus. :)

But what I can say is my 11 Accord was on C/D's 10 Best and the A4 at the time wasn't. :)

Actually that's wrong. I enjoyed driving a manual 2012 chevy sonic, ltz hatch, 1.4l, handled like a little go cart. Same for the rented mazda 5 race van. You can indeed get enjoyment out of shitboxes. You already know how engaging it is riding around on a 250cc. I call it a POS cause it can't beat my R1 on a straight, in acceleration or in corners, is that really fair? No. Different applications but I can say that driving a 250 is fun, same for little cars. Nimble and power to weight does count.

Yeah something cheap like a little Yaris can be fun to drive, but it's a different kind of fun.

Steak kebab vs. porterhouse. Both are good, but for different reasons.

That's only because you chose to drive those cars in a way that you found fun. There was nothing inherently unique about the Sonic. What you did with the Chevy Sonic, you could have done just as easily with a Hyundai Accent or Nissan Versa. By this definition, any car can be fun if you purposely drive them in a manner that you find fun.

I can just as easily take your R1 and ride it like an appliance, but I'm not going to turnaround and say it's a boring bike.

I test drove the BMW 320i and honestly it didn't have anything more advanced than your typical civic. All the normal stuff really, and the sound quality of the speakers was subpar/normal. The engine power / acceleration felt hardly any different than my current civic...
