It's not about where it's made. It's about a company's stance on customer support and satisfaction and their QA and QC processes. Ever since IBM sold off their PC division (and thinkpads in particular) to Lenovo, I view Thinkpads like any other mainstream brand and would definitely not pay a premium for it -- but that's because their attention to detail has dropped. Not because it's made in China.

Also, this thread is pretty old (started over 2 years ago, last post almost a year ago) -- why the sudden revival?
as with everything in life, laptops tend to break in cyclical fashion. Considering tomorrow is the end of the world, I am guessing most of these lost souls want to repatriate the good name of IBM. ;)

If the OP wants to ditch Lenovo, that's fine. But they should do so when they have found a suitable alternative.

What do you recommend?

I wonder if there are any worthwhile laptops for around $500-ish.

I thought maybe a i3-2310 or i3-2410 cpu. I thought maybe Acer? I think Lenovo's Thinkpad Edge looked interesting but not sure if the QC is up to par?

Also, is there any issue with the resolutions on these 15.6" machines? All of them are 1366 x 768. Is that ok for 3d and surfing?

They're not your friends.

Its a key on a laptop... Replace it with some glue. A 5 year old could probably do it... lol
People have bad experiences with every single company. No matter how good a company is to you, its crap to the person sitting next to you. You should have just called back and spoke with someone else.

Shoot, I wish I read this before I got my lenovo laptop. I got a T430s with a battery that has a lower than advertised battery power and I called technical support and they said it was acceptable and didn't want to replace it.

EDIT: Alienware has been my best experience, I dropped my laptop and it shattered to pieces. I put everything back together except the hinge was broken. They sent a specialist to fix it without charge.

I also have a T430s and I ended up buying the secondary battery for $100. I have not had any major problems and for the $650 I spent, I would say it was worth it.

As a suggestion, perhaps you might want to consider trying to get your story on the air? Companies like this are filled with incredibly incompetent or uncaring individuals.

It's amazing how quickly you start having service when their reputation might come into play.

I don't know. I've been bashing Canon Canada for nearly ten years and don't think they really care. Its likely cost them some minor business but their fan base is so huge it doesn't register.
