Do You Need Image Stabilization on a Canon Mid Telephoto Lens

For the Canon EFS 55-250mm telephoto lens, do you need to get the IS image stabilized version or is the non stabilized version good enough for some handheld shooting in the middle of the range of the 55-250? It's like half the cost to get the non-stabalized version.

I don't know about you, but I do need IS on when I was using the 55-250 a few years ago. I have the old version and the new STM version is supposed to be better. Used one from Kijiji are usually well under $200 for STM.

All three versions of the Canon EF-S 55-250mm have Image Stabilization. The newest "STM" version released in August 2013 has slightly better optics, better AutoFocus, and a non-rotating front element
