Do you own your Docsis 2.0 modem? If you do, then the old modem supports up to 15mbps. Low level tech's will tell you its only 10, but don't be fooled. I have confirmed with them multiple times that the old Docsis can go to 15mbps. You can also try it on this test.

If you don't own the Docsis 2.0 and you are paying rental fees, i don't see why you woudln't upgrade. It's free.

DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade worth it?
I'm on the oversold/overconsumed McNicol POI. I'm running an old SB5101. I'm thinking that if I upgrade to DOCSIS 3, would the speed increase at all? Currently I'm getting between 8-10mbps.
Teksavvy is my ISP.
Thanks.Last edited by Traian2003; Feb 9th, 2012 at 03:31 PM.

My understanding is that DOCSIS 2 supports between 20-30mbps (42.88 (38) Mbit/s as this article mentions http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DOCSIS)
My main question is: does the 4 bonded channels actually help with the speed during peak times?

Yes it will help you a great deal during peak times, but of course your area must have DOCSIS 3.0 support.. What speeds are you seeing during peak? I'm still on DOCSIS 2.0 modem in a DOCSIS 3.0 area but still get good speeds (I can max my 27mbit bandwidth) during peak, so I see no need for me to upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0...

I have a 2.0 modem and I'm on Teksavvy's 12 Mbs plan and I'm getting around 1.5 mb/sec downloads.
It's actually the DCM 2.0 modem that Teksavvy lists on their site when looking under the Cable section as I bought the modem off them!_______________

The important thing is that if it would help with the oversold POIs. The McNicol one for example is set to "no sell" or whatever they call it. Until August I was easily getting 2MB/s at all times, now I barely get 1.

max speed of docsis 2 is 42 - 43 megs down and 30 megs up.
but that is in lab speeds. in actual deployment cableco hardware will not see these speeds.
max speed you can see most likely is 18 - 25 megs with LOTS if speed flux.
the reason is docsis 2 only has 1 channel and in real world deployment other ppl local you on your node will be using the net at the same time.
this can saturate the node fast and your connection.
cable are not symmetrical. so trying to send and receive at fast speeds on one channel puts a lot of work on the modem and the node.
which is why they get soo hot. even causing fires sometimes. docsis 2 by design also had many security flaws ones that cannot be plugged permanently.
it can be monitored and you can put a band aid on it. but cable piracy over docsis 2 is a huge problem. which is why cablecos are phasing out docsis 2 and have no issues swapping out
you hardware for a shiny new docsis 3.
so to answer your question op. a docsis 3 modem is always good to upgrade to.
it's basically 4 docsis 2 modems inside 1 docsis 3 modem if you were to look at the amount of channels you are gaining.

I'm with Rogers and bought my SB5101. I just ran the speed test three times and averaged 15mbps. Of course this was run @ 8:30 on a Saturday morning.

Teksavvy won't let you use a DOCSIS 3.0 modem unless you switch to the extreme monthly plan which will cost you more per month.

If the POI is congested (lack of available bandwidth) a Docsis 3 modem will do nothing the channel bonding only avoids node congest *not POI congestion* the stuff you read on DSLR is nonsense and it's just people buying into TSI's up sell of your modem. SB5101,N,U supports up 30 mbps but it's Rogers that refuses to allow the modems used on profiles above 12mb.
