I had a medical apt on Friday and one of the doctors I saw gave out some of my confidential information without my consent.
The doctor spoke to a family member about some personal info without even give me the actual info first.
It does not really matter what all the info was, just the fact that I had specifically told the people at the dept I was at not to give out any of my information unless I sign a consent and am there in person.
The doctor I had seen gave out a bunch of info about some tests I had done, without even giving me that info first.
That has lead now, to some family members who think I am pretending I already knew the info that was given out- when I really was not notified of any of the things that were said yet.
I'm not too sure what I should do about this first.
The situation has caused me quite some stress and some issues with a family member.
I am considering taking legal action for this as I find it really inappropriate that that my info was given out without my consent. Not too sure exactly what I should ask for though when I see a lawyer.
Firstly I know you are supposed to contact patient relations, but from previous dealings with them not much realy gets done.
Just wondering if anyone has any good suggestions?
I know in Ontario and other provinces there are rules and laws to be followed on how personal info is handled- and in this case none of that was done properly.
Maybe I should not really be asking what should I do as I already have a pretty good idea.
Just trying to see if there are any other suggestions.

First of all, how old are you?
I might be wrong, but If you're not the age of majority in your province.
Then your legal guardians have every right to know your personal info without consent.
And who's that family member?
Unless they are your parents, I don't believe anybody else except with an order from the court or your personal consent, can legally access your personal medical info.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked whampoa for this post.

16 and over for medical reasons, you're considered an adult and the doctor cannot discuss results with anyone but you. Unless you're not of sound mind or you've given verbal consent to the doctor to discuss results, that's the only way a doctor can discuss your results with a family member.

You can complain/get a lawyer, but don't be surprised if it doesn't get anywhere.
